I recently learned why people sometimes draw a circle around themselves when sleeping in the desert, and the explanation is more unsettling than I expected.
A traveler once found himself stranded in the middle of nowhere. No shelter, no phone, just an open stretch of desert as night quickly approached. As the temperature dropped, he recalled a piece of advice an older man had once given him:
“Before you sleep, draw a circle around yourself.”
Exhausted and unsure, he followed the advice, tracing a simple, uneven circle in the sand around where he lay.
Sometime in the early hours of the morning, he woke up.
There was no sound, just an unusual stillness. Then he noticed something: the sand around the circle appeared disturbed, as though something had been moving around him… circling.
Yet inside the circle, everything remained untouched. No marks, no tracks just him, undisturbed at the center.
He stayed awake until sunrise.
In the morning light, the details became clearer. There were small tracks all around the outside of the circle, evidence that multiple creatures had approached, but for some reason, had not crossed over.
The explanation is not supernatural, but practical. That simple line in the sand creates a slight ridge or disturbance, and many desert creatures, such as snakes and scorpions are sensitive to changes in texture and vibration. Rather than cross an unfamiliar surface, they may hesitate or turn away.
It is not a guarantee of safety, only a small advantage.
