DNA Evidence
DNA recovered from multiple items tied to the crime, including:
- Trigger and components of the Mauser Model 98 .30-06 rifle
- The towel the weapon was wrapped in
- Fired and unfired cartridge casings
- A screwdriver left at the rooftop position
Weapon & Ballistics Linkage
- Rifle identified as a Mauser Model 98 bolt-action (.30-06) — belonged to Robinson's grandfather
- Found discarded, wrapped in a towel, in a wooded area near campus along Robinson's escape route
- Charging documents identify it as the murder weapon
- Full public details on microscopic ballistic matching remain limited
Surveillance Footage
Cameras captured Robinson:
- Arriving in a grey Dodge Challenger at approximately 8:29–8:30 AM (initial reconnaissance visit)
- Returning to campus at approximately 11:52 AM
- Moving through stairwells to the Losee Center rooftop
- Taking a shooting position (~142–150 yards from the stage) and firing a single shot at approximately 12:20–12:23 PM — roughly one minute after reaching the rooftop position
- Fleeing across the roof, jumping off the building, crossing a street, and escaping into a nearby neighborhood
- Additional escape route captured on homeowners' security cameras and eyewitness video
Physical Evidence at the Rooftop & Scene
- Palm print and forearm imprint at roof edge
- Footwear impressions matching Converse sneakers
- Additional forensic traces on rooftop and ground below
Digital Messages & Written Note
- Pre-event handwritten note hidden under a keyboard: 'I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I'm going to take it.'
- Post-event texts discussing the act and motive, including an apparent admission: 'I am, I'm sorry'
- Messages to roommate/partner about retrieving a rifle from a 'drop point,' leaving the rifle in a bush, visually watching the area where the rifle was left, and a reference to having left it wrapped in a towel — also referencing a scope and engraved bullets
- Instructions sent to someone to delete communications (obstruction-adjacent)
- Discord messages claiming responsibility and referencing surrender
Child Witness/Video
- A child witness had video or a witness account of the shooting; this evidence came up in February 2026 court proceedings where prosecutors were criticized for not disclosing it to investigators
Motive Indicators
- Online activity and ideological content
- Inscribed messages on bullet casings, including:
- 'Hey fascist! Catch!'
- References to the antifascist song 'Bella Ciao'
- Internet meme references
- Texts expressing opposition to Kirk's views: 'I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can't be negotiated out.'
- Context from personal relationships, including with his trans roommate/romantic partner who cooperated with investigators (placed under FBI protection until January 15, 2026)
Arrest & Manhunt
- Robinson was located in southern Utah following a roughly 33-hour manhunt that generated thousands of public tips
- He ultimately surrendered and was arrested
