#AbrahamLincoln was laid to rest in Springfield #OnThisDay in 1865. He was first placed in a temporary vault and then a permanent tomb was built. Today, the tomb is a shrine to his memory and all he accomplished in life.

America at 250 On May 4, 1776, Rhode Island became the first colony to declare independence from Great Britain officially through the Act of Renunciation. This wasn’t a sudden shift: it was the culmination of years of resistance. Rhode Island had already been pushing back against British authority, from protests against the Stamp Act to burning the HMS Gaspee in 1772. It’s a reminder that the road to July 4 wasn’t a single moment; it was a series of bold steps.

Today is National Arbor Day. 🌲 While different states observe Arbor Day at different times of the year based upon their own best planting seasons, the last Friday in April is the national observance.

Arbor Day is a unique celebration. While many holidays celebrate the past and remember deeds done, Arbor Day looks forward and backward, celebrating trees planted and their impact on a greener future. With the simple act of planting a tree, we can all leave a legacy that inspires generations to come. Every act makes a difference. Every tree planted is a step toward a healthier planet and a greener future. See how you can get involved at bit.ly/482xS8u

On April 24, 1800, the Library of Congress was established, beginning with just $5,000 in books to support lawmakers in the new capital of Washington, D.C. It’s important to understand that the Library of Congress is called that because it was a library for Congress. In 1814, during the War of 1812, British troops burned the Capitol, destroying the entire collection. But from that loss came a new beginning. Thomas Jefferson sold his personal library, 6,000+ books, to help rebuild it. Granted, Jefferson partly did this to help pay off some of his debt, but he also believed that knowledge across all subjects was essential to a functioning democracy. What began as a modest reference library has grown into the largest library in the world, preserving millions of books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, and pieces of American history. Each working day, the Library receives about 15,000 items and adds more than 10,000 to its collections.

Last night, Silence Dogood held their inaugural Town Hall Series at the Old North. A panel of historians and community organizers discussed Boston's role in resistance during the Revolution and today. After the program, community-authored messages were projected onto the church.

Happy Earth Day! Established in 1970, Earth Day was created to celebrate our planet and encourage everyone to act as responsible stewards for the health of our environment. So, take a walk in a park, pick up some trash, or plant a tree today for the only home we have. #EarthDay #WashingtonDC

I don't know how else to say this, so I'll just say it plainly. We are at Code Red. If this administration is not put in check soon, everything that makes America beautiful is at risk of irreversible damage. He is stealing, leasing and depleting our protected lands. He won't stop. Protecting our National Parks, U.S. national forests, and the majestic Arctic Refuge should not be a partisan issue. Once these lands are destroyed, they are gone forever. Future generations will never know or experience them. The wildlife that lives off them will not survive. One man should not hold this power over the future of all Americans. Call your Senators and ask them to protect our public lands and national forests. Make it clear you will not support the reelection of a representative who votes to mine, drill, or log on our protected lands. Code Red.

On this night 251 years ago, two men climbed Old North Church's steeple. They held high two lanterns as a signal from Paul Revere that the British were heading to Concord via the Charles River. Their famous “one if by land, two if by sea” warning ignited the American Revolution.

#OTD in #history, 1865, Robert E. Lee surrendered his army at #Appomattox. For years, a great civil war tested whether our nation—dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal—could long endure. 620,000+ souls lost their lives. But providence at last gave its answer
