While he's lucid he understands he finds it easier to think, it doesn't mean while mentally out of it he has the same self awareness. His mind broke under years of isolation and misery, it's not a switch he turns on and off at will.

Don’t misunderstand me, I LOVE Kinger. The issue, however, is that it’s never fully explained WHY Kinger didn’t actively try to make himself lucid sooner. He’s very clearly aware of how to regain his sanity, and both Pomni & Ragatha do as well
