Why will I feel it then? We have ships that float in the ocean and drill 5 miles below the seafloor for oil - nobody really cares. What will change? We will build better gadgets and consume more than we already do. Cool.
Zy@ZyMazza

I think for all the focus on AI people are really sleeping on space. You'll feel the singularity when they have the moon base operating, processing lithium-rich asteroids the size of Ohio. This will come to pass in your lifetime

@Empty_America It's amazing how quickly it happened too. My dad went from "do you really need all that salad dressing?" to Mass Affluence-level consumption in the span of about 10 years

The thing about boomer consumption is that it mostly happened really late in their lives. 55+, after year 2000. That may just be the pattern now, that wealth normally hits late like that for every generation. Most Gen X heirs will be 55+ when they inherit, etc.
constans@constans

Boomers started accumulating a lot of stuff over the past 25 years because they had a lot of money (being in the peak earning years) and things became way cheaper When boomers were young, things were expensive & a person could genuinely live well by abstaining from buying stuff

Multiple replies about why two dishwashers is actually quite logical and useful. Of course it is. The point is that we are so spoiled that we are unable to tolerate things that were normal quite recently. How many Americans would be able to live without a dishwasher today?
Analog Enjoyer@AnalogEnjoyer

It's amazing how Mass Affluence creeps into our lives over time. As the OP pointed out, this will probably become the norm soon. You'll be derided as low class for having only one dishwasher. This will also lead to complaining about how expensive it is to remodel a kitchen!

Is it better to have fewer cabinets and two dishwashers instead? Had to think this one through when building. At first, it seems exorbitantly decadent. But cabinetry is expensive, too, and you never need to unload. We went with only one because if one breaks, your system fails.

@Tyler_A_Harper More generally, it's difficult to integrate Marxist perspectives into an inherently capitalist institution. The contradictions will become too apparent!

Relatedly, you’ll be hard pressed to find academic departments hiring Marxists. One reason is that Marxists ask too many questions about—for example—how universities square “inclusive excellence” and liberation blather with a labor model built on exploiting part-time gig workers.

On the academia is full of Marxists debate: it’s illustrative to look at Mellon, the largest source of academic humanities funding by orders of magnitude. Projects tagged w/ Marxism in their grant database? 0 Gender studies? 46 Black studies? 25 Social Justice? 42 Latinx? 451

This is the train of thought you need to be on to understand the current economic anxieties
Conor Sen@conorsen

@MostlyMonkey If you grew up in the top 2% and out-earn your parents at the same age but now you’re only in the top 8% is that downwardly mobile?

@Empty_America It is eliminating another human frontier. What is the upside? We see the results, think "cool", and move on. Or we get to build new gadgets!

There is no hope for a better future, so I am going to continue buying professional grade tools that I will use 1-2 times on DIY projects. Sorry I don't want to live like a peasant.

@TURBOPOSSUM If we really cared about the wellbeing of the homeless we would force them into state-funded rehab/mental health facilities rather than let them sleep on benches while we try not to make eye contact

@Empty_America They always ignore the massive group of middle class office workers for whom life seems to be getting better - the ones packing into Disney World and driving the $100K SUVs.

You can tell that most of the doomers on here have a loose cluster of shared IRL characteristics, even when they are anon it comes through. - Fairly affluent upbringing - Low to Mid level office work or aspiring to it - Suburban raised. That is the max depression bio.

@conorsen I mean this is way worse in Europe! The Greens there draw >50% of their support from this professional class I’m merely saying that the professional class needs to do their job of supporting status quo & capital shoukd be careful when shearing them via layoffs, outsourcing etc

The West has a major flaw in how white collar/knowledge workers play their role Ideally these ppl are full defenders of “the system”: they spend & consume, actively fight to KEEP the status quo as any change will make them worse then worse off Increasingly, they don’t do this
⭕ AI & Design (Marco)@AIandDesign

I'm not gonna lie, the @Meta layoffs are some of the most dystopian I've ever seen. They got told to work from home, they were sent the emails at 4AM in the morning. Those who weren't impacted have software on their computer that tracks their every move, preparing AI to take their job as well. They're literally training the AI that will eliminate their position as well. Meanwhile, Meta is raking in RECORD PROFITS. I am a massive, unapologetic AI enthusiast. Yet, this is NOT the future I had in mind. I wish for Meta to crash and burn. This is not the way. Literally nobody benefits from this.

@sanpellyenjoyer Yeah I don't understand the used vehicle market. It's the same at every price point. Who is buying the used truck with 150K for $65,000 when the new one is $70,000?

@SethLargo @Empty_America Intuitively it's blue to red in that order. I grew up in a very red-coded house with country crock in the fridge. i immediately became a stick on the counter guy as soon as I moved out.
