@ChristosArgyrop @f2harrell @5_utr When developing asymptotic approximations pre-MCMC I used Minder, C. E. (1980). On inspecting multiparameter likelihood surfaces. Comms in Stats - Theory & Methods, 9(18), 1931-1939. to assess which parameters had quadratic marginal likelihoods.

In page 33 we discuss how frequentist analyses can be saved from the failure-to-achieve-quadratic-asymptotia by doing the same computations using Bayesian software. You may find a shorter, introductory calculus level derivation to the more complex papers by Cox & Barndorff-Nielsen about magic formulas.

@jasonptodd @klaxaa This reminds me of a Granada documentary I saw in Manchester in the late 70s about 2 16 year olds from Leigh in Lancashire who'd left school, were unemployed & spent their time hunting rabbits with ferrets. Despite Leigh being only ~15 miles from Manchester ITV used sub-titles.

No joke: this was my exact experience meeting @klaxaa's family. I learned "airport Norwegian" (flyplass Norsk), or the standard used in Oslo. They speak in Haugesunds dialekt. Very different. "Vi spiser potet" and "Me ete jordeple" are the same sentence 🫠🫠

Currently have an article with Lancet Digital Health that has been under review for 6 months so far .... I've heard others are having similar experiences. Good journal but worth thinking about alternatives if you want timely peer review (which you surely do)

Today was the first day in 40 years of biking in cities that I wore a helmet. All part of a set of changes to habits that I am trying to make (as was setting my Twitter account to private some weeks ago).

I hope my friends on the platform will agree that this is an interesting view of the historic town of Lauren.

The Dutch relatives have been on the phone, deluded as ever. I remember 1996 in a local pub in Walmer with a Dutch landlady. Wonderful atmosphere, wonderful win. Here's hoping for the same again.
