FDNY rigs with broken A/C are putting firefighters at serious risk during extreme heat. Why? A shortage of mechanics means critical repairs aren’t getting done. FFs are responding in 100°+ temps with no relief—this is a preventable crisis. Fix the fleet. Fund the staffing.

Tuesday, the FDNY and @FDNYPro Films premiered its latest film "An Extraordinary Measure.” The film depicts how New York City EMS paramedicine made its debut half a century ago, advancing pre-hospital medical care, and tells the story of how it evolved into the FDNY’s elite paramedic program of today. The Department also unveiled a brand-new medal, the Dr. Sheldon Jacobson Award: An Extraordinary Medal to be given to a paramedic who demonstrates innovation, mentorship, and a dedication to saving lives. “The film “An Extraordinary Measure,” is a look back at the storied history of Emergency Medicine in New York City. Fifty years since the first class of paramedics began emergency medicine and pre-hospital care have changed significantly. Technology has changed. Equipment has changed. The types of calls that we go on have changed. The size of the workforce has changed. But as I've learned in these last few months as your Fire Commissioner, what hasn't changed are the people. The dedicated people of this Department, who put their lives on the line in service of others, men, and women, who are very highly trained and for whom empathy, care, and quick thinking are second nature. This incredible work changed our city and saved countless lives,” said @FDNYFC Robert S. Tucker. “As we commemorate this milestone, it's essential to recognize the dedicated work of paramedics, emergency medical technicians, and healthcare professionals who have been at the forefront of emergency medical care in our City. Their unwavering commitment of excellence and their passion for serving communities have left a lasting impact on public health and safety in New York City. In the words of an inspiring quote about serving the community: ‘True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.’ This sentiment resonates deeply with the spirit of paramedicine, a profession guided by selflessness, compassion, and a relentless commitment to the well beings of others,” said Chief of EMS Operations Michael Fields. The film was made possible thanks to the support of the @FDNYFoundation, with proceeds to support its ongoing programs and initiatives.
