I don’t think people realize how much healthcare costs are driving big companies to fire and not hire. It costs them $30k per family, per year for premiums and care. Most of that goes to the massive, vertically integrated insurance companies that send weekly bills that no one reviews in details. And it doesn’t include the company overhead to deal with it all. It’s usually the 2nd largest expense after payroll. Which is insane It’s far easier to blame AI than it is to blame Healthcare costs. Want to increase jobs, wages and improve affordability for every American ? Break up the biggest insurance companies. Make divest non insurance companies. They don’t need thousands of subsidiaries. NYT blames on dummies for women higher rate of bad outcomes after a crash. Is it the dummies? 1) women are more frail - thinner bones, joints, not built for combat or high intensity sports. We get hurt more on every sport for this reason. 2) women use the passenger seat more often - way more dangerous. 3) women actually die less and get in fewer car crashes (men are more risk taking) - so the stats works only for those who did get into an accident, not the whole population.

My academic work is on the history of the idea of human extinction. Every time I’ve written about this for a mainstream outlet I’ve been absolutely bombarded with emails from people saying they hope humanity goes extinct. Can confirm it’s a very odd and disconcerting experience.
