@AndyBillyions @OrevaZSN The 14 year old is not eligible anyway. You can’t sign a lease or anything similar in your name until 18. Minimum wage is not for anyone under 18 due to laws. It’s kind of a contradictory statement

The minimum wage is meant to be the lowest wage you can live on and afford housing. So, for everyone saying "it's not meant to be that," yes, it is. That's why it's called the minimum wage.

@AndyBillyions @fujokaisen @OrevaZSN Just angrily raging against something you don’t use with the stupidest arguments against minimum wage. You don’t understand it and you (unsurprisingly) only view it from your lens of a shitty employer, not an actual human who cares about the well being of your community.

In the minimum wage argument one side says minimum wage should be a "living wage" the other side says it shouldn't. A 14 year old can't live on their own. They have to live with an adult who they depend on to provide for them. Minimum wage must be paid the same to dependent age people and adults meaning that minimum wage is not intended at least at present to be livable by its application. If it were to be renamed from minimum wage it shouldn't be named "living wage" it should be named "dependent wage" because thats the minimum people who depend on anther person's income to survive must be paid. By mandating that the "dependent wage" must be enough to be livable it will make it very difficult for dependent aged people to secure employment because their skills and abilities are less than an non dependent aged person. Which means the dependent aged person would likely not be able to secure employment until they are more skilled but they aren't able to become skilled because only adults can get jobs. All I'm saying is that there needs to be a carve out for dependent aged people so they are able to more easily get jobs.

@DearOld_Debs @OrevaZSN That's my question. A 14 year-old must be paid minimum wage and the OP says minimum wage should be enough to afford housing. How is that possible for a 14 year old? I don't think he has thought this through very well.

Joel, speaking of living in the stupidest times, I think you might be suffering from low IQ. A 14 year must live with a parent or guardian. They can't legally live on their own. They are called dependents because they depend on the income of someone else to live. If minimum wage is designed for people who legally must depend on the income of another then it can't in fact be considered a "living wage" whatever that is.

@AndyBillyions @OrevaZSN That’s why minimum wage is variable depending on age. A 14yo’s minimum wage is obviously lower than an adults

Let's hope. 🤞 The exponential increase in technological advancement could shorten that time frame significantly. When AI can evolve itself autnomously billions of times a second it will be interesting how that affects the timeline. I'm thinking it will probably catch most people unprepared and flat footed. Einstein's IQ was 160 or so eventually AI will be IQ 1,000,000 and keep going. How long it takes to disrupt all jobs doesn't seem too far off when you think exponentially. We'll see.

14 is the youngest age a person can have a job. And yes a 14 year old must be paid the federal minimum wage. Except for the first 90 days of employment a minor can be paid less but after 90 days must be paid the minimum wage. Making a comment on minimum wage really brought out the idiots in the room.

What I'm missing concerned about when talking about raising the minimum wage is kids not being able to get any job experience because no one will want to hire them because they have to be paid the same as an adult with experience. It's not a red herring it is a legitimate concern. Young inexperienced people should be allowed to make less than a livable wage or they will struggle finding work.

@AndyBillyions @ChadBradford90 @OrevaZSN The point, the min wage was original made to support a "minimum standard of living" for full time adult. Sure, children got them min wage, but it's not set for them. FWIW, I'm not a supporter of raising the min wage, but it's red herring to bring in children to discussion.

But I'm literally talking about the first job of a teenager with zero experience. Federal minimum wage law says that a 14 year old must make the minimum wage. Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage will make it extremely difficult for 14 year old who has zero experience to find their first job to gain any experience in the work force in the first place. I'm not talking about anything else. At 18 I had 4 roommates. Why? Because I didn't have any experience on how to do anything so my labor wasn't worth as much as other people's with more experience. Raising minimum wage to a livable wage hurts the young people starting out because it eliminates jobs and allows more experienced people to take the jobs a less experienced person could do. That's all I'm saying.

I pay what a job is worth. If a job isn't worth the minimum wage I eliminate the job or add that jobs responsibilities into another job. Most of my employees make many times minimum wage. I don't need a federal government telling me what to pay my employees. If it's not worth the money I don't hire the employee. If its not worth the money the employee doesn't take the job. The free market is much more efficient than federal central planning ever will be.

@AndyBillyions @scruffyjay @OrevaZSN 10x zero is still zero. What if there’s no one else? You’re just going to pay them less to do the exact same work out of what… spite? The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA)

@_ry34715 @scruffyjay @OrevaZSN No it's called experience. A 14 year old has zero experience a 30 has 10x+ more experience. Who gets the job if the pay must be the same? Not the kid with no experience. Age discrimination is legal it's actually forced. No one under 14 can legally work in the US. 🤷‍♂️

No what I'm saying is that if a q4 year old and a 30 year old have to be paid the same the 30 year old will likely get the job because the 30 year has more experience in general. He'll likely be more reliable and work harder. So you're saying a 14 year old and a 30 year old are the same? Sure the job might be the same but the worker is definitely not. You want to make it more difficult for the kid to get a job?

@AndyBillyions @belle379 @scruffyjay @OrevaZSN So what you’re saying is that you want two workers doing the same work to be paid differently purely based on age? If our job is to put fries in the bag, why does you being 30 mean you should get paid more for that task?
