when my 4-year-old’s daycare held a “lunch with mom” event, every single mom showed up. we all have other jobs, which is why our kids are in daycare. but we took off work or found a way to get there in the middle of the day. now, they’re doing an event for the dads … at 6:30 in the evening. it’s a small example, but the double standards are real.

I agree that the double standards are real BUT a dad's NATURAL role is to provide and providers by nature are supposed to be at work during the day.
I can bet you that the school administrators and teachers are mostly women and they know based on experience and nature that most men won't be available for "lunch with dad" events.
Society will frown at a jobless man but not at a jobless woman. The expectations from both parents are not the same.
