I just rescued a Black Rustic from a False Widow web. I don't normally interfere but the trap light brought the moth to that vicinity. Luckily the web was only on his wing tips. He's sitting in a pot waiting for a final inspection before release #mothsmatter
Just come out from seeing Milton Jones live, and it's spritzing a bit. I thought the rain wasn't coming until about 3am. I'm going to put the trap out anyway #mothsmatter
Having thought the switch to Westerlies would be a problem later in the night quite the opposite! Potential migrants Gem nfg, Radfords FS nfg, P vitrealis, 2 x Silver Y, xylostella & RD Pearl. Another Flounced Chestnut, Shoulder-striped Wainscot(!) & H glaucinalis. 47 of 21.
An update on the two putative Flounced Chestnut this week. Many hours of research later, CMR is happy both are Southern Chestnut. A new species for VC12 but almost guaranteed to be hiding in plain site on heathland elsewhere. A difficult group to say the least, needs work!
@AndyStocker9 Great trap Andy, I’d have binned that Wainscot as an L-album, which is making me wonder if the pale one the other day was one of these 😬😖
Memories of a similarly productive mild & wet night 12 months ago - 21 spp recorded on both occasions in different assortments. Last night 3 smashing nfy: Delicate, Green-brindled Crescent & Sallow. Phyllonorycter messaniella nfg if confirmed. 30/21 Worcs VC37 🦋💚🍃
@JulesA4thJuly Hi Julie, I’m on the edge of East Hampshire, about 25 miles inland. I rarely get migrants on the first night of arrivals but if conditions remain good they often turn up the following night.
Much better night despite the wind. Potential moth of the night for here a putative Flounced Chestnut. First Chestnuts of Autumn, 3 Merveille DJ 4 Black Rustic etc. Potential migrants Clifden NP, Scarce-bordered Straw nfy, HM Hawk-moth, xylostella. 37 of 17.
@clare_taz@WheatersDave Moved my trap a little to catch S Easterly full on, don’t know if it helped. Having said that as usual better moths were outside.
It was so warm outside when I brought the trap in just now, but inexplicably, there were only two moths in it. One Black Rustic and one LYU 😟 #mothsmatter
@mickey_ratfink That’s very true I suppose it’s a lot to do with the hype of having a blue and seeing one, one of those moths that make the news so regularly, there’s always time for one to appear 😀
Thought I had got my dream moth Sunday morning at 5am when I had to do my trap, I shouldn’t of been disappointed with the huge red underwing, because it was a brute of a moth even if it was a bit worn, kinda hoping it was blue though 😂
