NCIP is useful for urologists because it turns routinely collected data into something you can use to guide improved care: • Benchmarking: see where your unit (and consultant-level activity) sits vs peers. • Service-facing outcomes: LOS, day-case rates, readmissions, complications, revisions/re-ops and mortality—plus the ability to drill into episode detail when something looks “off”. • Track change over time: pathway tweaks (stones, enhanced recovery, day-case expansion, follow-up redesign) should show up in trends, not just anecdotes. • Stronger business cases: variation and avoidable bed days are hard to ignore when the numbers are clear. However, NCIP is only as good as your coding and your department may also lose revenue if this isn’t right. If volumes/outcomes don’t reflect reality, don’t just shrug at the dashboard—engage your local clinical coding team: • agree how key procedures/diagnoses are documented • review a handful of real cases together • fix recurring documentation gaps in op notes/discharge summaries • use NCIP methodology notes so you’re comparing like with like Bottom line: NCIP isn’t about guesswork. It’s about data visibility—and knowing your data is what lets you improve care effectively. Laura should have turned 26 today I kid myself that she’s having the time of her life with new friends in some new city But in reality I held her hand while she died at home, in a borrowed hospital bed - aged just 23 & 5 months. Her loss is so huge, it blocks out the sun.
