🚨BREAKING: Andre has signed a new four-year deal with Wolves, until 2030. It includes the option of a further year. A huge statement of intent from the club ahead of a Championship season. #wwfc

@f2_viperzero_ph Surely the obvious procurement strategy here should be to order the additional Type 26s to replace the ones sold to Norway, then order a follow on air defence variant to fulfil the Type 83 requirement and an improved batch 2 Type 31 to fulfill the general purpose frigate role.

If the cost of acquiring the Type 26 continues to go down the RN 🇬🇧 should used it as an opportunity to order more, ideally more than just to maintain the 8 order (maybe 10~12 +5 to even 6 for 🇳🇴 for a total of 14± City-class frigates.

Over five years since it was announced, the Type 32 frigate program has gone nowhere. Will it feature in the upcoming Defence Investment Plan or will its absence signal the end of the concept, asks @Naval_Tech @ModernNavy #RoyalNavy #DIP naval-technology.com/features/uk-ty…

@AdamMIbbotson Fun fact: If you look just to the left of that place, you'll see an EasyJet 737 flying by. @54.498411,-1.5371309,512m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDUxMy4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">google.com/maps/@54.49841…

It turns out the 2025 Google Earth satellite data around Darlington is pretty insane for archaeology. 😵‍💫 Is that a... henge? 🤔 Check the LiDAR and... well, it's certainly something MASSIVE, round, and old. And there are three of them in a row! #archaeology

🚨EXCL: Raul Jimenez has said there is a 'possibility' he could return to Wolves. There have been early talks between the club and player about a potential deal for the striker who is out of contract in the summer. Story w/ @lukew_powell #wwfc expressandstar.com/sport/football…

@Hush_Kit It's a simple design that can be maintained by relatively basically equipped crews, carries a decent payload over a decent range at relatively low cost, lots of western military vehicles are designed around its dimensions, all of which make it a no brainer for global airforces.

@Combat_learjet There's one of these in southern Spain, can be seen clearly while flying the approach into Malaga, even at night the heat of the tower makes it visible to the naked eye.

I recently flew by Ivanpah solar electric generating grid. Below is what Grok had to say about it. 😳😳 Ivanpah is widely regarded as a bust — a high-profile, expensive failure of concentrated solar power (CSP) tower technology, though it provided some engineering lessons and did generate power (just not enough to justify its costs). sentinelksmo.org Key Facts on Ivanpah • Location and Design: Mojave Desert, California. Three 459-foot towers with ~173,500 heliostats (mirrors) focusing sunlight to heat boilers for steam turbines. Gross capacity ~392 MW (net ~377 MW). • Cost: ~$2.2 billion total, including $1.6 billion in federal loan guarantees (Obama-era DOE funding). nypost.com • Expected vs. Actual Performance: • Designed for ~940,000–1 million MWh/year. • Early years were dismal: ~40-50% of target in year 1, improving to ~65-70% later but rarely hitting full expectations. Capacity factor ~24% actual vs. ~28-31% planned. en.wikipedia.org • It relied on natural gas to keep systems primed (especially at night/cloudy times), producing significant emissions for a “clean” project. It improved after initial ramp-up and met some contract obligations by ~2017, but never became economically competitive. en.wikipedia.org Why It Failed • Technology Outpaced: CSP towers without significant thermal storage proved inflexible in a grid shifting to cheap solar PV (photovoltaic panels), which plummeted in cost and became far more efficient/scalable. Ivanpah lacked meaningful storage for dispatchable power. sentinelksmo.org • High Costs and Maintenance: Expensive to build and run; underperformed on output, leading to high per-MWh costs. • Environmental Issues: Famous for “streaming” birds (singeing/incinerating them in concentrated sunlight). Estimates: thousands per year early on (hundreds documented, with search inefficiencies). Also other wildlife impacts. foxnews.com • Operational Problems: Fires from misaligned mirrors, turbine vibrations, lower-than-expected efficiency in real desert conditions. cpuc.ca.gov Current Status (as of 2026) Utilities (PG&E and SCE) wanted to exit contracts early and shut down two units in 2026, citing high costs and better alternatives — saving ratepayers money. California regulators (CPUC) rejected full closure for grid reliability/“green” goals, forcing continued operation at extra cost (~$105M to ratepayers in one report). It’s effectively a subsidized relic. en.wikipedia.org Critics (across political lines, including some environmental groups) call it a boondoggle worse than Solyndra in scale. Proponents note it was a “first-of-a-kind” (FOAK) project that advanced CSP knowledge globally, but economics and PV’s rise killed it. nature.com In short: It produced some renewable energy and data, but at massive taxpayer/utility expense with poor reliability, environmental tradeoffs, and no path to competitiveness. Modern utility-scale solar is almost entirely PV for good reason.

@PaNurX1 @GrzegorzBr78989 @laidlaw_stuart @Hush_Kit Look across recent conflicts, Iraq, Syria, Iran, even Russia against smaller scale attacks by Ukraine. Some may get shot down, but in every case a decent number have still hit their targets. It's the same reason cheap but mass produced Shahed/Geran drones are so effective.

@PaNurX1 @GrzegorzBr78989 @laidlaw_stuart @Hush_Kit I'd argue the difference isn't really that important, in any real conflict NATO will saturate the defences with a large number of cruise missiles and decoys, VLO or not, no air defence system has so far proved capable of dealing with that scale of threat. 1/2

@Hush_Kit Love: everything, did my first solo and all my single engine flying in that beauty, great fun. Hate: the door never latches right, sometimes it's "shut" but then magically pops open as you taxi out, other times it gets jammed closed and you get locked out of the aircraft...

@Hush_Kit Love: cheap access to aviation, simple, reliable, rugged Hate: tiny cabin door, the door only being on one side, the uncomfortably low ceiling for anyone over 6ft, the tiny window that hardly opens. The C172 is a class above in my personal (highly biased) opinion...
