@LeeRMonroe @TomWilkinson144 @needGod_net Catholics don’t believe we earn salvation. We believe God’s grace actually transforms us, and that living faith includes obedience and love. Even our good works are empowered by grace, so when God rewards them, He’s crowning His own gifts, not our independent effort.

Let me be clear about what Rome actually teaches, because I want to be precise, and I want to attempt to cut off more "You're misrepresenting," argumentation. Inevitably it won't matter, but I'm going to try. Rome teaches initial justification through baptism. Fine. But from there, maintaining your justified state requires avoiding mortal sin, which means keeping the commandments, attending Mass every Sunday, receiving the Eucharist in a state of grace, going to confession. These aren't suggestions. They are requirements. You wanted proof Rome teaches faith plus works for salvation. Here it is. CCC 1129 says the sacraments are necessary for salvation. Trent Session 6 Canon 24 says the justified truly merit eternal life through works done in grace. Canon 9 anathematizes faith alone. Canon 30 anathematizes any claim to certainty of salvation. Rome calls the mechanism condign merit, which is just a sophisticated way of saying your works earn something without using the word earn. Grace infuses the work, God rewards it, but your cooperation is still part of the ground of your final standing before God. However you dress it up, Paul rules it out in Romans 11:6. When works enter the equation as anything other than fruit, grace ceases to be grace. You cannot split the difference. On James 2, yes, standard move. James is writing to believers and asking one question: how does anyone see your faith? He is not addressing the grounds of justification. Works are the visible fruit of a living faith. Ephesians 2:8-10 makes it plain. Saved by grace through faith, for good works. The works follow salvation, they do not secure it. Here is what Rome is actually offering you. You can never know you are saved. You must keep performing. The best most people can hope for is purgatory. That is not rest in Christ. That is a spiritual gun to your head dressed in incense and tradition. The gospel is better than that. Christ's righteousness covers you completely. You rest in his finished work, not your own performance. God bless you.

@the_thin_place @MilesGloriosus9 At least the Anglicans have a doctrine they follow with established definitions and creeds. I respect that more than Ryan’s theology and ideas. I’m still shaking my head over it, to think not loving God isn’t a requirement. Mind boggling to me.

@Anevs23 @MilesGloriosus9 I highly doubt he has any formal background, and clearly has a very shoddy self-education. He appeals to a type of Evangelical Christian that is identical to himself.

@the_thin_place @MilesGloriosus9 I don’t know is background in theology but he doesn’t have a deeper understanding, very surface level. He talks about faith so much but never love. When love is the heart of the gospels. Faith can move mountains but without love I am nothing.

@Anevs23 @MilesGloriosus9 Totally insane. This is what the Anglican doctrine of Sola Fide states. “this sentence, that we be justified by faith only, is not so meant of them, that the said justifying faith is alone in man, without true repentance, hope, charity, dread, and the fear of GOD, at any time"

@JesusandWhatnot This was a great debate, however I wish you would have pressed him harder when he said that loving god is not a necessary condition to enter heaven. The whole Bible talks about loving god. God loves everyone so it’s not just his love for us since not everyone goes to heaven.

@MilesGloriosus9 @the_thin_place I’m surprised more people didn’t call him out when he said love for God isn’t a necessary condition to enter heaven. He says no it’s God’s love for us, which is true. But god loves everyone, but not everyone enters heaven. So we have a part to play too, by choosing to love him.

@the_thin_place He is positively the worst theologian. I’m perplexed why, today, men of such limited intellectual ability get so many followers?

@needGod_net @Anevs23 Thank you for clarifying! I assumed this is what you meant but sometimes it’s better to double check. I see nothing wrong with this statement. I agree with it.

@choconservative @needGod_net The heart of the gospel is love. You shall love the lord your god with all your heart with all your soul with all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself. Do you want salvation because you love God, or do you love God because you want salvation?

@taco_talks I guess they are forgiven of their sins too then since they also have faith, they are just going a step further. That doesn’t erase their forgiveness.

@needGod_net @choconservative And also, god loves everyone but not everyone is going to Heaven. So you’re half right. So you can’t say our love for him plays no part either.

@choconservative @Anevs23 We aren’t saved by our love for God, we are saved by His love for us in what He did to save us. And that as a result, that makes us love him. But a person isn’t going to heaven because of how great their love for God is, that would give them a reason to boast.

This is a very common tactic by Protestants. Notice the subtlety of the deceit. 1. The last sentence is Scriptural. It's proclaimed by the Catholic Church as well. No one argues that. 2. The first sentence is just his opinion. See how he adds his opinions to Scripture and then pretends his opinions are actually Scripture? 3. His opinion about salvation in the sacraments is objectively wrong as Scripture states. Yet he pretends it's not 4. His opinion about priests is agreed to by the Catholic Church. No one argues that. See how he includes things that no one even disagrees with? What he's trying to do is take ANY disagreement at all, as proof that Catholics believe salvation comes from priests. He's intentionally trying to bear false witness 5. Same with the salvation by works. Now perhaps Protestants of good will should think long and hard about why deceit is necessary if they have the truth? 🤔
