If you say that someone is from the “13th century” or in “ancient times”, it’s not really an insult. But if you say that someone is from “2016” or “2020”, it’s clearly an insult, and an implication that being ‘of’ these years is worse than being of eras much further back.

The Iliad if it was written by OP: “I hate you Hector!” said Achilles. Hector ran like a coward, but then Athena disguised showed up. “You should fight Achilles,” she said. “This is for Patroclus! Parry this you filthy casual”, and so Achilles killed Hector.
Negative Creep@7Negative_Creep

people think I’m asking to remove the slice of life scenes when I’m really saying that the average ryukishi scene is written like: “I’m pissed” He said that he was angry. Which really meant that he was upset. Unbelievable. In other words; he was mad. He said that he was mad.

War, violence, force, that which subjects a being, comes to all men. In the Iliad, it spares none. Neither the great Achilles nor noble Hector escape it. Death comes the same for Trojan and Greek. The Gospels follow Homer: even the God-Man was subjected to it. It is man’s fate.

@PrinceArgyelus Can you really say you actually understand this if this is not your lived experience? The Romani are like this, but you are no Romani, and you do not live in a Romani society. Romani society exists within or parallel to Hungarian society, but you do not live in it as a Hungarian.

@CZundapp And besides, the point of the quoted post would be read by mainstream Muslims as “a Muslim invented much of Catholic philosophy” and not “our holy Ibn Sina’s philosophy was stolen by the Catholics”.

@CZundapp I feel that this discussion is getting further away from the original agreement we already had. Even the hardcore atharists I know take quite a few things from al-Ghazali, but discussing what is going to end up being a separate conversation. Indeed, we can claim Ockham the man.

The reason why Islamic studies fell behind is due to the incapacity to move on from past glory. They will cite these philosophical works like hadiths, and dull their own minds. Drunk on their own success, they forgot the art of philosophy. No Ibn Sinas are born, only Muhammads.
al-Nasafī@nasafism

I mean, you only have Aquinas thanks to Muslim scholars. He built his whole philosophical system on the shoulders of Imam al‑Ghazali, Ibn Sina, and others, repackaging their ideas into his Trinitarian theology.

@_bonaventurian @Secellgible @StarkConor @MusliuKastriot Avicenna had to read Aristotle’s Metaphysics several times over to understand. Wise men know when to speak with confidence, and humility does not require explicit acts of prostration. He humbled himself to learn, earned the right to speak harshly, then humbled himself at the end.

@Secellgible @AngelPoltava @StarkConor @MusliuKastriot Yet, a certain humility is required to search for truth for its sake. St. Thomas rejected Avicenna's 'floating man', matters of physics and God's creative act; had wildly different theological subject matter almost entirely from St. Augustine with Lombard. Copycat... where?

The internet apologist’s need to reduce entire traditions to his own is perhaps one of the most infuriating and ignorant things I come across on X. By this perverse logic, one could dismiss Ghazali, Avicenna, and Kindi as mere recyclings of the Platonic-Aristotelian tradition, and so one would fail to see what was unique in their appropriations of that tradition.

This isn’t a criticism of the thinkers themselves. This is a criticism of how we treat these thinkers. Far too often are wise men and saints and heroes, and even a mere man searching for meaning, used as bludgeons by the dull to mask their ineptitude and need for pride.

@Secellgible @StarkConor @MusliuKastriot You are a fool lacking in humility. You have the habit of a petulant child, unsuited for proper learning. You will continue being an Avicennian without the humility of Ibn Sina, and you will gain nothing from your study. Drop the childish habits and people may receive you better.

@StarkConor @MusliuKastriot You are the only one being sloppy here. the only reason why Aquinas affirms his concepts of God being pure esse is through ibn sina. Just because he can relate it back to some other thinkers mean nothing.

@adam7867863 It is not necessary for me to cite the Church’s establishment of universities and institutions, all the scientific discoveries made by Catholics, or the foundational philosophy of the Medievals, or the contributions to the arts through the ages. Your ignorance is self-evident.

@CZundapp The mostly Maturidi Ottomon Empire, and its absorption of the Ash’ari Mamluk Empire made both true Atharism and true Mu’tazilism functionally extinct, (the former, you know as being resurrected by the Salafi movement). Unless you’re straight-up Salafist, I don’t see the issue.

@CZundapp I don’t know if I would agree with the idea that most Muslims can’t claim them as “theirs”. I can claim Ockham even if vast majority of Catholic philosophy now is decidedly against the Ockhamist view. And al-Ash’ari and al-Maturidi inherited both Atharism and Mu’tazilism.
