China’s new official obsession: Getting people to read more books. In February, China passed a new regulation to build more public reading facilities and spaces. In April, China had its first-ever national reading week. State media encourages people to put down their phones and pick up a book. President Xi wants China to become a “cultural powerhouse” by 2035, and says the revival of reading is one of its pillars. Xi quotes Mao saying, “One can go a day without eating, a day without sleeping, but not a day without reading.” In 1949, less than 20% of China's population was literate. Today it's approaching 99%. When one of the most tech-focused countries in the world says that a population of book readers is vital to their future, we should all take note.

🚨BREAKING: On Friday afternoon, an artificial intelligence coding agent powered by Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.6 deleted a company's entire production database in nine seconds. The company is called PocketOS. It is a software platform that powers car rental businesses. The database contained months of customer bookings, vehicle records, and operational data that small rental car companies relied on to run their businesses. When the database was deleted, all of the backups were deleted with it. Three months of customer reservations evaporated.

@AngelaCarling @Jerry4BOfEd @kareem_carr No one is saying that the work cannot continue. It's the need for outside funding from taxpayers that's at question. If the psychology work requires expensive equipment to measure, say, brain activity, that would be appropriate for NSF funding.

It will take decades to fix the damage being done to American science.

If Donald Trump would just resign and leave office, all of this chaos would stop. No more indictments, no more trials, no more endless drama, no more dividing the country with his ego and conspiracies. The “awfulness” and negativity? It follows him because he keeps feeding it. Step down, go play golf, cash in on whatever grift you want — and the country can finally move on from this endless circus. He doesn’t have to worry about it anymore. The rest of us wouldn’t either.
