Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission Decision.
13 April 2002
-Important Paragraphs.
-“The Commission’s mandate… [is] to delimit and demarcate the colonial treaty border based on pertinent colonial treaties (1900, 1902 and 1908) and applicable international law… [and] shall not have the power to make decisions ex aequo et bono.”
-“The parties reaffirm the principle of respect for the borders existing at independence… [to be determined] on the basis of pertinent colonial treaties and applicable international law.”
-“A treaty should be interpreted by reference to the circumstances prevailing when the treaty was concluded…”
-Article 14(A) of the Demarcation Directions provides: “The Commission has no authority to vary the boundary line. If it runs through and divides a town or village, the line may be varied only on the basis of an express request agreed between and made by both Parties”
-“The borders… are to be determined as of the date of independence of Eritrea (27 April 1993)… subsequent developments [are limited].”
-“ The Commission has examined the major elements in the course of events since 1935: the Italian invasion of Ethiopia; the outbreak of the Second World War; the British military occupation of Eritrea; the post-war developments including the treatment of the political future of Eritrea; the creation of the federation between Ethiopia and Eritrea; and the eventual termination of that federation. However, the Commission can perceive nothing in that chain of developments that has had the effect of altering the boundary between the Parties. The boundary of 1935 remains the boundary of today. ”
-"These references represent the bulk of the items adduced by Ethiopia in support of its claim to have exercised administrative authority west of the Eritrean claim line. The Commission does not find in them evidence of administration of the area sufficiently clear in location, substantial in scope or extensive in time to displace the title of Eritrea that had crystallized as of 1935."
-"Since Badme village (as opposed to some other parts of the Badme region) lay on what was found to be the Eritrean side of the treaty line, there was no need for the Commission to consider any evidence of Eritrean governmental presence there, although Eritrea did in fact submit such evidence. Moreover, even some maps submitted by Ethiopia not only showed the distinctive straight line between the Setit and Mareb Rivers, but also marked Badme village as being on the Eritrean side of that line. The Commission must also observe that the Ethiopian invocation of the findings of the OAU in respect of Badme in 1998 (Comment, para. 1.4, footnote 4) failed to mention the OAU's express statement that those findings did not "prejudge the final status of that area which will be determined at the end of the delimitation and demarcation process and, if necessary, through arbitration."
-“The Parties agree that the origin of the “sixty kilometers from the coast” formula was a recommendation by Emperor Menelik in 1897 to Major Nerazzini, the Italian negotiator. Eritrea adduced material to sustain its contention that from 1897 until the conclusion of the 1908 Treaty, the “60 kilometres-from-the-coast” formula served as a modus vivendi. Some map evidence, which is examined below, supports this contention. Ethiopia did not contest the existence of the modus vivendi prior to 1908. ”
-"The first question that arises in the application of Article I of the Treaty [1908] is the definition of the coast. Ethiopia abandoned its conception of the coast as including islands and submitted in its concluding argument that “the coastline” should be understood as “adhering continuously to the continent itself, and not any coastlines of islands as such.” This was also the position presented by Eritrea. As the Parties are in agreement on this point, the Commission will take as the coastline the line adhering to the continent itself, and not any coastlines of islands."
Virtual Demarcation
"As the Commission evidently cannot remain in existence indefinitely, it proposes that the Parties should, over the next twelve months, terminating at the end of November 2007, consider their positions and seek to reach agreement on the emplacement of pillars. If, by the end of that period, the Parties have not by themselves reached the necessary agreement and proceeded significantly to implement it, or have not requested and enabled the Commission to resume its activity, the Commission hereby determines that the boundary will automatically stand as demarcated by the boundary points listed in the Annex hereto and that the mandate of the Commission can then be regarded as fulfilled. " (Nov. 27, 2006)

Strengthening Farmers’ Associations through Sustainable Agriculture in Ghindae
In Mai Adkemom, within the Ghindae Sub‑zone of #Eritrea’s Northern Red Sea Region, a community‑driven initiative supported through the UNDP @GEF_SGP is strengthening farmers’ capacities to promote sustainable and inclusive agricultural practices.
The project supported a Farmers’ Association of 56 members, including 13 women and 6 persons with disabilities, to improve horticulture and citrus production through the establishment of three Farmer Field Schools dedicated to citrus, vegetable, and poultry production. These field schools served as practical learning platforms, enabling farmers to access organic agricultural inputs and apply climate‑smart and environmentally sustainable farming methods.
Beyond direct beneficiary support, the project functioned as a hands‑on knowledge‑sharing hub for experts and newly assigned agricultural extension workers from the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), as well as members of other local farmers’ associations. Through practical demonstrations and peer learning, participants strengthened their skills in producing and applying bio‑fertilizers and bio‑pesticides, adopting safe and high‑quality fruit and vegetable production practices, and constructing soil and water conservation structures.
By integrating #localknowledge with evidence-based #sustainableinnovations, the Ghindae SGP project contributes to enhanced agricultural productivity, #ecosystemprotection, and #strengthenedcommunity resilience through the inclusive participation of beneficiaries and local stakeholders.

@george_posts This is a classic example of shifting the blame, twisting of narratives and is disingenuous at best.

But it has not been implemented. This is yet another example of why Eritrea🇪🇷 needs to change its political ideology and liberalize both its political and economic systems—not only to be a friend, but also an ally of the #West🇺🇸🇪🇺. By not doing so, #Eritrea is inadvertently helping hostile Ethiopian🇪🇹 regimes while harming its own #economy through sanctions, blockades, and ongoing issues such as the failure to implement border demarcation.
As I have said before, had #Eritrea been politically and economically open to the #West—welcoming investments—the threat from #Ethiopia would have been shared. #Western stakeholders would have pressured #Ethiopian governments to demarcate the border, refrain from repeatedly threatening #Eritrea, and sanctions would likely have been lifted.
Deng Xiaoping of China🇨🇳 broke the mold by opening up the Communist Party #CCP🇨🇳 and reforming the economy. This ultimately led to #China being embraced by the #West and gaining access to global markets through joining the #WTO. On the other hand, Cuba🇨🇺 failed to do what #China did, and we all know where #Cuba is now. Much of #China’s growth today stems from that shift while the #CCP remains in full control of the government and #China’s territorial integrity.
#Eritrea🇪🇷 needs its own Deng Xiaoping at this critical moment. 🤷♂️

24 years ago on this day, the Eritrea–Ethiopia Boundary Commission (EEBC) delivered its final and binding decision—affirming the boundary as delimited during the Italian colonial period, in line with international treaties of 1900, 1902, and 1908.

For over hundred years the elites in #Ethiopia never told its people and Cadres, the truth about #Eritrea...like the following
'The 1993 Agreement on Economic and Political Cooperation between the government of the State of Eritrea and the Federal Republic of Ethiopia called for the following:
1) Eventual elimination of trade barriers between the two countries
2) Free movement of people and capital across the border;
3) designation of Massawa and Assab as free ports for #Ethiopia;
4) designation of the birr as common currency until the introduction of new currency in #Eritrea '
The truth and only the truth shall set free the people of Ethiopia and in peace with it self.
