Disgaea creator Sohei Niikawa says that if PlayStation is going to abandon physical games, Sony “may as well eliminate the hardware too.”
Speaking to Noisy Pixel at Anime Expo 2026, Niikawa said physical games are much more than a way to play.
“I think physical editions of games are very important. For fans, being able to keep a game they love as an object can have a great deal of value. It becomes a memory or a keepsake connected to something that matters to them.”
“The executives who decided it have probably never experienced coming to an event like Anime Expo and having someone approach them with a physical game to ask for an autograph.”
“If they’re going to go as far as eliminating physical packages, they may as well eliminate the hardware too. A television would be enough. Why would you need the console?”

It's not the full picture: every time a game releases with both physical and digital copies, the physical copies outsell it. Every time.
This is planned obsolescence, and a desire to control your content. To modify it, delete it, or use dynamic pricing. It's greed.

Despite the outcry, it seems that the data makes Sony's position on the matter pretty understandable. Just 7 games have sold more than 100K physical units on PS5 in the USA in 2026.

Every time a game releases both a digital and physical version of a game, the physical out-sells it every time.
But even if that weren't the case before, it's certainly the case now. Look around you: no one likes this decision, and everyone's done with Sony unless they reverse this decision.
There's no reason to own a PS6 without physical games. PCs are faster for cheaper, have more games and more platforms to purchase them from, better customer service, and the possibility for emulation.
PS6 is stillborn unless it reverses this decision.

*even if we consider how old these games are looking at the data it is consistent with it trending towards digital>physical in 2026.

It’s funny how the only ones calling for Game Pass to end are people who don’t even use it. It's just outsiders upset that Game Pass subscribers get access to so many day one games on the service.

Ah.. No, friend. Without physical games, PS6 is stillborn. There's zero reason to own one: PCs are faster for cheaper, more versatile with MULTIPLE storefronts rather than one that treat their customers right, cheaper costs, and you get to own the games, with bigger libraries and the possibility for emulation. Plugs into the TV just the same.
No physical games? No PS6.

I think the Xbox Game Pass debate will forever be a long one.
+ It’s great for most consumers
+ It takes away a lot of risk for devs by giving them money upfront.
+ It gives games more exposure
- it usually hurts sales
- it often leads to “I’ll wait for GP”
Ultimately I think it’s better for indie and AA devs than it is AAA.

Sony said they will no longer be producing physical DISCS. They never said anything about physical cartridges. They will announce a hybrid handheld that will still play physical carts. They obviously can’t announce their handheld plans at the moment so they are just taking heat for no more discs.
