True, but what I mean is - I don’t think that’s really Lena’s shadow side. Maybe a little bit. But aren’t we all a little cringe deep down? I just find her brilliant at exposing the human condition at all costs, the more shocking the better, even if it’s gross or ugly or hard to watch. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@AnnaLindThomas I’m talking about Lena’s capacity to bring forth Hannah!

Lena Dunham was sort of like David Lynch in that her art came from being profoundly and courageously in touch with her shadow, in the Jungian sense – his was the profound violence and evil that lurked in his psyche; hers was painful obnoxiousness and overwhelming cringe

This is the first time I’m hearing some of y’all don’t visualize and I’m shook 😂 I envision things so clearly, I make movies in my mind and can often take an hour or more to fall asleep if what I’m visualizing is interesting. Sometimes I force myself to think of boring things to give myself a chance lol

Speaking generally of course, yes I think the incentives are different. With a publisher, they are invested in you - a good editor falls in love with your work and chooses you. Their reputation is on the line, they love your story, they believe in it and you. Obviously people have been wildly successful self-publishing. But if it’s a dream to be traditionally published, I wouldn’t give up on it.
English

@AnnaLindThomas That makes sense. My big question there becomes is this, in your experience, different from working with an editor you hire? Maybe incentives aren’t as aligned?
