I think a smart thing to do if they don’t want to relocate to Lexington would be to rent office space at the new Belmont Park. Especially since the silks registration office is located in their NYC office. Would give the NY employees daily access to racing and owners.

The @jockeyclub probably cuts a check every year for Park Avenue rent that looks a lot like their annual aftercare funding. One keeps the lights on in Manhattan. One keeps retired Thoroughbreds safe. This tells us everything we need to know. 😞

“I think the changes to the Midlantic May Sale are very forward-thinking, good decisions made by Fasig-Tipton.” Fresh from a Grade 3 success with a Mendelssohn Bay sourced at the Midlantic May 2YO Sale, @BhupatSeemar voiced his support for the sale's revised format.

In memory of the one-of-a-kind Rags to Riches ♥️ The daughter of A.P. Indy, who made a name for herself as the third filly in history to win the GI Belmont Stakes, has died due to infirmities of old age, @coolmoreamerica announced today. She was 21. In a race that stands out as one of the most memorable renewals of "The Test of Champions," the striking chestnut filly with a well-known blaze outbattled Curlin in a dramatic stretch duel to take the final leg of the Triple Crown in 2007, becoming the first filly in 102 years to win the race. Rags to Riches was the first Classic winner for both her trainer, Todd Pletcher, and her jockey, John Velazquez. Purchased for $1.9 million at the 2005 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, she also won the GI Kentucky Oaks, GI Santa Anita Oaks and GI Las Virgenes Stakes and was named champion 3-year-old filly of 2007. "Rags to Riches was a truly talented racehorse, and it's been a privilege to be around a horse of her calibre," said Coolmore's Dermot Ryan. "Her achievements left a lasting impression on all of us, and she brought great pride to her ownership. I would like to thank Bob Davis and his team, who have cared for her with exceptional dedication for over a decade." Rags to Riches ♥️ 2004-2025 Read more: thoroughbreddailynews.com/belmont-stakes…

@retro411 I agree with all of this Pete but there should be a separate award for people like Griffin. He has definitely been a huge advocate of our sport in a very fun and positive way and he is very likeable! But we should still honor those actually financially investing in racing.

I know I have nothing to gain by sharing this take but here goes... The award recognizes “a new Thoroughbred owner who has been successful in the sport and made a positive impact on the industry.” This kid’s done exactly that - bringing racing to audiences most don’t even know how to reach. His enthusiasm and positivity have expanded the sport’s reach and should be applauded, not criticized. Of course, there are plenty of new owners investing millions who deserve a ton of recognition too - 1000% - but this small nod isn’t something to lose sleep over. I’ve worked with him on a few things, and he’s genuinely a good/smart kid who’s willing to learn and use his reach to promote the game to younger audiences outside the traditional bubble. Feel free to call me or the TJC out on the definition of owner, etc - but I hope you get the point deep down.

@BlueHenBldstck @RepoleStable What about Randy and Jenny Boyd (Boyd Racing)? Mr. Boyd is President of University of Tennessee. New owners who are also very charitable and philanthropic.

This has nothing to do with Griffin Johnson, he seems like a great guy who’s passionate about the sport. But awarding him New Owner of the Year is a huge insult not just to every new owner this year, but to every owner in the game. You’ve all heard me talk about the conflicts of interest that plague this industry. Here’s how this one plays out:     •    OwnerView is owned by The Jockey Club.     •    America’s Best Racing (ABR)  also owned by The Jockey Club, pays Griffin Johnson as a racing ambassador.     •    Terry Finley, CEO of West Point Thoroughbreds and a Jockey Club Steward, gives Griffin a small ownership stake in Sandman.     •    Then Jockey Club President Jim Gagliano and his board which includes Finley has OwnerView select him as New Owner of the Year. Meanwhile, we are watching a declining foal crop, inflated horse valuations, and record profits for breeders and sellers many of whom conveniently sit on the Jockey Club’s Board of Stewards. While horseplayers, track operators, owners and trainers struggle, and people are suffering, these guys are having their best financial years ever!!!!! The class-action, antitrust, and conflict-of-interest lawsuits aren’t just coming, they’re inevitable!!!!! Let’s fix this damn sport already!!!!! #NoMoreConflicts

As I was leaving @FasigTiptonCo tonight, I saw a trainer’s last moment with their horse. From humble breeding to a $3M sale—years of work and emotion distilled into a quiet goodbye just like so many moments along the ride… alone in the dark. The side of this game we rarely see.
