@TheScie72830285 @DavidAFrench From the Canadian side it feels like we've given up so much, sacrificed in good will and let bygones be bygones to keep the relationship going. Then be the very first hit out of the gate. Canadians feel betrayed, and have no choice but look elsewhere.

@Annicity2 @DavidAFrench My perspective from this side of the border is that we believe Canada was taking advantage of us on trade. Also a decade of people like Trudeau and Carney taking Canada in the direction of Europe and not the US socially and morally. It was a slap in the face.

"I don’t think Americans fully appreciate the extraordinary cost of Trump’s bluster and blunders. It should go without saying, but once you threaten to invade an allied country, you don’t just place the existence of the alliance in jeopardy; you raise the possibility of allies turning into mortal enemies. You can also trigger the kind of insecurity and scramble for power that contributed to the start of World War I. In practical terms, it’s hard to see how alienating American allies puts America first." nytimes.com/2026/04/26/opi…

@TheScie72830285 @DavidAFrench It's ironic because Canadian's feel largely the same of the US. Discounted oil, softwood lumber dispute, and countless trade demands from the US. Being the small dog, and super dependant we usually concede. Even during this trade war we have. Goes to show perspectives eh?

Americans love banging on about the War of Independence. They’re quieter on the War of 1812. Here’s why. In 1812, America declared war on Britain. The plan was to march into Canada and annex it. Thomas Jefferson said it would be “a mere matter of marching.” It wasn’t. The Canadians sent them packing. Two years later, the British sailed up the Potomac. American forces collapsed at Bladensburg in what’s still called “the Bladensburg Races” because of how fast they ran. President Madison had already fled to Maryland. The British walked into Washington unopposed. They sat down in the White House, ate the dinner Dolley Madison had laid out for forty guests, used the President’s silver, then set fire to the building. Then they burned the Capitol, the Treasury and the Navy Yard. A freak thunderstorm put the fires out the next day. The British left when they were ready. It’s still the only time a foreign army has captured the US capital. You can see why it doesn’t come up much.

@Melly6234557098 @ArminiusRex97 @TahraHoops There does seem to be semiconductor investment happening, and some of the auto sector is moving from Canada to the USA (unfortunately). The money promised from countries as part of the deal appear to be a nothinburger. Feels like tech/AI investment would have happened anyway.

Tariff madness has made us the partner no one wants. Carney is right, the US has changed. Our closest allies are pivoting to other countries because One Guy can't stop tariffing everything in sight and blowing up deals via posting. Posting threats as a means for policymaking should not be the President's favorite tool!
Aaron Rupar@atrupar

Mark Carney: "Many of our former strengths, built on our close ties to the US, have become weaknesses. The US has changed. That's their right. And we're responding ... we're deepening our partnerships with our closest allies, including the EU, the Nordic countries, and Australia."

@ArminiusRex97 @Melly6234557098 @TahraHoops Fair, the auto sector is leaving and industry has always left for the US. Investment happened in the past, and happens now. How do we seperate what has been a result of tariffs and what hasn't? Throwing investment stats up is kinda meaningless otherwise.

@Annicity2 @Melly6234557098 @TahraHoops On shoring chip manufacturing is critical for sovereignty and defense. These are just the projects that have started, there are more coming. If you have a huge market like the US, it makes sense to move your business to avoid tariffs, which is how Canada gets hollowed out.

@ArminiusRex97 @Melly6234557098 @TahraHoops Lots of tech, considering the AI boom has been going brr have those been as a result of the tariffs? Chip production, that one makes sense. Facebook? Do tariffs influence the decision to invest? I ask because most of the results seem negative. Time for me to read up.

@Melly6234557098 @Annicity2 @TahraHoops Yes, as mentioned, there are many positive economic indicators, and investment and growth has started. You need to get over your hatred of Trump. This economic policy was not designed by Trump, and it is a good policy for the US

@ArminiusRex97 @TahraHoops Job growth stalled significantly, the tariff regime seems to be damaging. Lots of promise of investment, let's hope it follows through. GDP from AI going brr Auto has been moving back! Total production is lagging due to increased input cost unfortunately. Maybe that will change?

@Annicity2 @TahraHoops Many companies, including auto manufacturers are committing to billions of investment in the US with onshoring. GDP per capita and GDP are up, & there has been significant positive job growth. This isn’t an overnight fix, but manufacturing and industrial jobs are coming back.

@WorldPeace33334 @TahraHoops The administration changes but you'll always be close neighbor and allies. I know if the brass tacks ever came down I'd trust the American people to be there. Likewise I'd trust Canada would be there for America. We're in this together, like it or not.

@ArminiusRex97 @TahraHoops Legit question, are there specific industries and sectors benefiting? I know aluminum production has actually decreased. Steel has stayed relatively flat with a slight bump (despite damaging downstream inputs). What are good examples where the policy has helped?

What Denmark and Canada did together with Hans Island was a gift to each other. There was never any chance we would fight each other over this rock. Its a symbol of how much more is possible unity is strength. America, Russia and China will never get this. All their shit is all meaningless if you stand for absolutely nothing like they do. They stand for weak slogans. While we fight for each other and a better world together 🇩🇰🇨🇦🇬🇱🇪🇺💪 @denmarkdotdk @AnitaAnandMP
