Today, I submitted formal written comment to the TEA and to all 15 members of the @TXSBOE on TEKS standards regarding Mission San Antonio de Valero — the Alamo. The content advisors of the Social Studies TEKS Review Work Group have called for truthfulness, factual accuracy, and emphasis on primary source documents. I am asking the board to apply that standard consistently to the Alamo. 1. The 1718 founding of Mission San Antonio de Valero, documented in Spanish colonial records and National Park Service documentation, is not currently required to be identified as a primary historical fact in curriculum materials. 2. The UTSA Center for Archaeological Research 2022 report, a primary source document, confirms 1,055 recorded Christian burials beneath the Alamo grounds. This documented campo santo is not currently required to be acknowledged in any TEKS standard. 3. The military cemetery status of the Alamo, established by the documented burning of approximately 187 Texian defenders in funeral pyres on March 6, 1836, is not currently required to be treated with military cemetery reverence standards in any curriculum material. Every claim in the attached request rests on documented historical records, archaeological reports, and Texas law. This is a request for factual accuracy and chronological completeness. A full packet will be submitted to each board member for the June meeting.
