Many seem to have a morbid fascination with crass and lowly matters despite their age. I think of how I was 14 when classmates started talking abt their experiences with prosties and it gets tedious after a certain point. No merit in hearing about the misfortunes of the depraved.

I just can’t accept this. They were so clever and innovative, and musically sophisticated. By any standards, they are one of the best bands that ever existed, and I would say they are *the* best.

The Beatles are one of the most important bands in modern music history. That is not the same thing as being one of the best. A lot of the reverence around them comes from historical position, not actual listening experience. They arrived at the right cultural moment, shaped the industry, influenced everyone after them, and became canonized so completely that people now confuse influence with superiority. Nonetheless, being an early inspiration is not the same as being unmatched. The Beatles get treated less like a band and more like a civilizational achievement. People do not merely enjoy them; they feel socially obligated to defend them. Their status has become self-reinforcing. Every generation is taught that they are the gold standard, so many people inherit the conclusion before they even examine the music. And once you strip away the mythology, what is left is often a catalog that is clever, catchy, and historically innovative—but not necessarily emotionally deeper, musically richer, or sonically more compelling than what later artists would go on to do better. A lot of Beatles praise is really praise for innovation in the historical context. Fair enough. But context cannot do all the work forever. “This was groundbreaking in the 1960s” is a different claim from “this remains the pinnacle of music.” Plenty of artists since then have written more complex lyrics, built more ambitious albums, pushed production further, and explored darker or more interesting emotional terrain. And they actually sound better without Yoko Ono screaming in the background. So no, saying the Beatles are not that good is not a ragebait. It is just refusing to confuse historical importance with permanent artistic supremacy.

My uncle was at school with Robert Plant in Stourbridge in the mid 60s. He went to see Robert one day and Plant’s dad turned him away, saying Robert was in trouble for hanging around with a “a pack of beatniks”. Robert later clarified that beatniks in question were The Yardbirds.

I think we ought to abolish undergraduate education as a cultural institution and replace it with mandatory public service doing ecological restoration work in randomly assigned corps that mandate the mixing of ethnic groups and social classes.

@drumm_colin I coach (badly) sports p-t and always focus on the weakest players because they need the most support. At an elite level, teachers need to have some freedom to teach. Trust kids. Educate them (i.e. for predators). But don't sanitize their lived experience. It's pointless.

I think it's okay if college students don't do much reading because they're mostly too young to learn much from it anyway. Being learned is an old person's game.
But those who show aptitude and desire for learning ought to have access to appropriate instruction

@JoyceCarolOates Teachers should be themselves. This encourages students to be less judgemental and have more open minds. I know limits are necessary but I learned from the people who were not trying to be nice just as much as from those who were more conscientious.

this has always been a by-product of classroom teaching. the subject may be English or algebra but the protocol of instruction is a part of education.

Not trying to be mean but if you’re majoring in the humanities & you can’t read 200 pages a week, and you feel the assignments are garbage, perhaps the humanities isn’t for you. Spend less time tweeting your disdain for books and I suspect you would find the time to read them.

How does a prof live with oneself knowing that, if their argument is adopted, millions of people will be made worse off in serious ways?
