At the same time, abruptly forcing a sharp rise in wages could trigger large-scale layoffs, ultimately hurting workers through unemployment. A balanced approach is necessary, protecting both workers’ rights and their jobs. Genuine labour movements rely on dialogue, not destruction. In the end, it is the poorest and most vulnerable who suffer the most from such violence, the very people in whose name it is usually justified. If destruction and anarchy could solve labour issues, Kanpur would not have gone from a major Asian industrial hub to a struggling industrial shadow of its former self.
