Evil is Greatness, inverted. ROLES, RULES AND INVERSION Parent, friend, lover - every role is an archetype, a game, a system of rules, a playground to be Great, Good, Bad, or Evil. Good tells you what the rules are. Great transcends. Bad breaks. Evil conceals and inverts. Knowing the good tells you the evil. I don't need to explain to you what a great, nor what an evil father is. Zoom out. SHEEP, SHEPHERDS, AND WOLVES Imagine a farm where three systems interact. The Sheep live in the order created by the Shepherds, which is threatened by the Wolves. Each system sees itself as Good - disruption is Bad, and when intentional, seen as Evil. The Sheep - Live in the order the Shepherd created, protected, fed and safe - The Wolves are seen as evil - The Shepherd is seen as good — prefer to not realize he will kill them The Shepherd - Creates the system for the sheep as a resource - May even love the sheep, killing them is not a contradiction - The Wolves are seen as bad, a nuisance to be managed The Wolves - Live in orderly packs with ranks and loyalty - The sheep are a resource - The shepherd is seen evil Each system sees the others as evil. Functionally they are. But no evil has actually entered the picture. Within the roles though, you can visualize great sheep, great shepherd, great wolf. What is an evil sheep, evil shepherd, evil wolf? Evil Happens Within the Order Evil doesn't come from outside. It comes from inside. - A Sheep hoards all the food and lets the rest starve. - A Shepherd defrauds his brother and takes possession of the farm. - A Wolf guides his puppies to a lost forest and leaves them there to die. Evil is parasitic subversion of the order for self benefit. It requires four things simultaneously: - Knowing the order — understanding the rules and the trust that holds the system together. - Wanting to profit — having a personal gain motive - Subverting it — acting against the order you appear to be part of - The cover-up — hiding what you're doing The cover-up is what separates evil from predation. The wolf killing the sheep doesn't cover it up. That's predation — honest, visible, what wolves do. The Cover-Up Is the Tell This is the diagnostic tool that actually works. When evaluating whether someone in your life is operating in bad faith or genuine evil, don't ask how disruptive they are. Ask: - Are they hiding something? - Does their story shift slightly each time? - Do they always have a compelling explanation for why the rules apply differently to them? - Do they generate explanations for why things disappeared, why agreements were never made, why the terms changed? - Do they tell a story of why their rule-breaking behavior is proper, that they only reveal after they are cornered about it? - Do they pretend to have rules just to break them when you follow through? HOW TO DEAL WITH EVIL The problem with evil is you can't manage them. You can't negotiate, you can't compromise, you can't meet middle ground. By definition, every rule offered will be met by a concealed betrayal over the same exact ground you have given them. Once you've identified the evil, the obvious solution is to remove them from the game. But how do you find them? By dissonance. Evil feels wrong. The greater you are the more you can spot evil. You defeat evil through intentional Greatness: Invert evil. You can't fight greatness-inverted with goodness. Goodness follows rules. Greatness-inverted breaks them creatively. It outpaces good. Greatness defeats evil like it's nothing. THE SIMPLE MORAL FRAMEWORK TO BE GREAT WHILE DEFEATING EVIL Start at human. Great human, good human, bad human, evil human. Be a great human: Truth is good. Win/win as default. Win/lose to punish the ones who play lose. 1. Truth is good. - Free yourself from deceit. If you want to hide, something is wrong. Not necessarily evil yet — but wrong. - Everything you do, make sure you're comfortable of everyone knowing you did it. - When you're prompted to lie, tell the truth, and stand. - When in doubt, ask yourself: this is something I want to be known for. That's your tell. 2. Win/win by default. For something to be good, for a rule to be operational, it must function the same way when you're applying it to others and when it's being applied to yourself. You must be ok being the executioner and the receiver. It must be good when everyone does it. It must bad when nobody does it. When it's set that way, your win is the win of the whole system. Even if you win alone, now you're the example for others to follow, and past / current winners serve as your role models. You’re a service provider? Be the service you would like to receive. Employee? Be the employee you would like to have. Be the boss you would like to have. The friend you would like. You can answer any moral question by flipping it to yourself. Is cheating bad? do I want to be cheated on. You already know. Use your knowledge. 3. Win/lose for the ones who play lose. The players who are set in win/lose, who would destroy the system if their behavior becomes the standard, have to be made lose. Push them away from the game. Push them out of your life and leave them out. Win - without them. Failure is a brutal teacher. They may have a redemption arc, don't make it your problem. They have their own life to figure out. It’s up to them.
