How can you say that about Buffalo when no one's played a playoff game? Dallas is where they are because of brilliant drafting/developing. Their "Culture" includes that and Leafs are horrific at it. Colorado won a cup with fantastic speed and got even faster. Leafs got slower. Carolina is also very fast and I'm not sure anyone thinks their "Culture" is strong.

Fantastic article. Agree 100%. They would lose by lack of goals every year in the playoffs and then no one mentions goals, it was they were too soft and need to get tougher. And yes, the Gudas incident worries me a lot they will simply think they need to get "Tougher" again. That incident is far from the only concern Leafs have.

Buffalo is in year one of building a serious playoff threat year after year. Watch Dahlin play and tell me that’s not a leader! Toronto messed up when they let Kadri go, let Hyman walk, let Brown go, and when they gave Matthews the C. They should never have catered to the 3 panzies for contracts. They should have gotten rid of Reilly years ago or found a real #1 D. Now they’re making more bad decisions to cover up for past mistakes. Re: Carlo. Nylander could have been sold as well as Marner before we got to this point. Colorado is a wagon behind multiple elite leaders. Dallas also built well. The Leafs had all the potential in the world after Matthews draft and threw it away. Everyone involved from Dubas, & Shanahan to the current regime is responsible.

Tampa, Dallas, Colorado, Carolina, Buffalo. Each of those teams have a culture and the right mix of skill and “will”. The Leafs were never that team nor close to that team. Year after year adding new pieces from skill guys to grinders. The leadership group on each of the teams above are light years ahead of our leadership group. Change the GM & Coaches all you want. Bring in new players. The guys wearing the C, and the As aren’t the guys you go into battle with. You’ll keep posting away your stat sheet crap but you’ve never been into battle in a big game. It’s not something you see on a score sheet.

It's nice when this is pointed-out rathjer than the majority of the media brainwashing Leaf fans into thinking grinders who finish their checks and go into the dirty areas is how you win a cup.

One could also that under Keefe they were a puck possession team and Dubas tried to build the team to play such hockey but unfortunately they also could not get it done. I agree, the team is not built well and while maybe they would win more playing a slightly different system, they’re just not good enough, either way. They need a lot to change. Not bigger, slower. You could go back to puck possession but they still need players who know how to win big games.
