Between the DNC autopsy report and the Granta short story competition it has been a banner week for sufferers of imposter syndrome. The bar is on the floor

@NBAjeunefille @paolotheandal @DannyVegito I'll be honest I don't remember. I think for whatever reason chiaroscuro stuck with me and so whenever I've wanted to find the "correct" version I've googled chiaroscuro, thereby compounding the error.

For Benin I read The Hand of Iman by Ryad Assani-Razaki which was really excellent although I couldn't quite get on board with the depressing ending @FredericHCarver/benin-the-hand-of-iman-184f2055817a" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">medium.com/@FredericHCarv

This year (& prob for the next several) I'm trying to read my way around the world in contemporary fiction to diversify my reading & to learn something about new places. Purely for my own benefit but I'm posting reviews here so I can remember what I read medium.com/freds-blog/tag…

I'm not 100% certain but I'm pretty sure the Parsons/Waldheim story hasn't been in print before now, and there should be a few more bits of new history in the report when it drops too. Watch @1for8billion in a few weeks!

Q via @1for8billion, Aditi Gorur How to ensure no more monopolies in top UN jobs? A: My conviction is that you need the sr posts to represent the world. Sometimes it's not easy, sometimes there's a political cost. You always need diversity in representation. I'm not afraid of doing that

... and this cuts across both so they were never finding out unless they asked - had his SPADs found out would they have told him? Doubtful - had he/his SPADs found out would they have made a different decision? Of course they'll claim so now but seems highly unlikely

... to be fair given that the whole thing leaked the moment they were looped in that's not totally unreasonable - more broadly it's been obvious for a while that there's been a breakdown of comms esp back channel comms between a) civil servants & SPADs and b) the FCDO & No10....

It's not quite that, but it's not better: it's that he behaved appallingly by not keeping Number 10 SPADs in the loop as he decided to do that. To which a few thoughts: - they showed no sign whatsoever of wanting to know, quite the opposite - FCDO clearly didn't trust them, and..

Starmer's position is that Olly Robbins behaved appallingly for not blocking his decision to appoint Mandelson US amb after it had been announced, blessed by the King and agreed by the US in time for the inauguration—as requested by No 10—because of security risks the Foreign Office deemed manageable.

@josephdevanny True... which I guess loops back to the question over whether Starmer or McSweeney was seen as the point person on this.

One thing I'm taking from the Starmer v Robbins is this is exactly the sort of culture clash between civil service and political realms that the SPAD process was invented to mediate. And yet here the SPAD process has instead exacerbated the problem in part because of the clear...

@Arbeider4Fred Only 2x (1953 & 1996) did SC itself, via communique, report vetoes during a private mtg re an SG candidate. But because SC didn't identify vetoers these aren't commonly counted. Since all other "vetoes" in private mtgs on SGs weren't reported by SC, they are normally not counted.
