@ChookMFC @SaffronOlive This could just be a zendikar vampire or something, they could even reprint it without it being explicitly a star trek affiliated set. Similarly with cards like Badgermole Cub and Ravenous robots. Not so much with the 8th variant of raphael or spiderman. all to say i agree

@SaffronOlive Cards like these feel so good compared to the legends like Captains Kirk (or America). I’m interestingly coming around to the idea that it’s the named characters from other ip’s that bother me most about UB.

Easily the best 60 card format spoiler from today. Two-drops that attack your opponent's hand have a great track record and this seems like one of the best versions. Should see play back to Pioneer at least, and maybe even further back. Basically a two mana black Vendilion Clique.

@XRG117 @SaffronOlive not giving the card back makes this quite a bit better than bats imo. Ofcourse you give them the card immediately, but the 2/2 lifelink is also way more relevant than the 1/1 lifelink flying.

@SaffronOlive I think it's probably as good as bats, clique had secret tech of self target but the bear stats and bear cost with lifelink is what's the allure on top of the very good hand attack. Not to mention this is an ETB which makes it repeatable in the decks that do that.

@HRpufnsting @SaffronOlive we already know UB draws in new players, most arguments against it aren't really about if it gets more players into magic or not. They're mostly concerned with the rapidly changing nature of the game people have grown to love over 25+ years.

@SaffronOlive The TLDR is this anecdotal story is proof that UB does draw in new players. They had a personal experience that serves as evidence to the idea that UB is healthy for the game because people who wouldn’t be before are now invested in the game in someway

@YungDingoMTG @JumbaMtg Gonna be real i think your fans are exho chambering you here. Didnt know you but remembered you from mh3 previews. This seems like a logical conclusion to come to if im in the tron seat. Your behavior regardless is alao cringe even if you are correct.

@allgood122172 @marionumber4 @Thiss_Youu What decisions did biden make in 2022 that caused gas prices to spike? His personal creation of the covid virus? or perhaps his mind control beam to make putin invade ukraine?

@marionumber4 @Thiss_Youu True, the opposite is also true. You had no issue paying high gas in 2022 (gas topped $5 btw) but now it’s the worst thing ever. Everyone is a hypocrite, it’s getting old

@Mengu09 do we really want to still be playing cling to dust with phlage gone? I thought that card was an embarassing but necessary concession not to lose to it.

@Mengu09 the promos are genuinely only good when they luck into doing a commander staple that happens to be good in an rcq format(nykthos) or it's a UB set, and we get cloud/aerith/gandalf which are actually worth your time.

@SaffronOlive game 1 fires has not a single piece of interaction for the combo, while having a glacially slow clock. deck kills turn 5 at the earliest with cavalier of flame. Then postboard there's 4 disputes and 1 disenchant as interaction. I don't see this being anything but a stomp for jar.

Monday for Best Standard Deck Ever it's notorious combo deck Broken Jar from 1999 up against Fires of Invention from 2020! What's your pick? @OtherFish_ @SaffronOlive errata its mana value to 1 so you can get it off saga, that'd be about the power level increase needed for jitte to be good in modern.

I'm glad Umezawa's Jitte is finally unbanned in Modern, but I'd be shocked if it actually saw a meaningful amount of play.

@elnicodegonne @SaffronOlive cards being too accessible is not even close to being one of the problems with magic atm, in fact I'd say it's one of the things they're doing way better, no more 100$ mythics in every set.

@SaffronOlive The format is still "cheap" if you avoid some cards. Not everything has to be so accesible. Is part of what is killing modern magic ATM

As much as I don't put any money making scheme past Wizards, there's no way they'd do Premodern Horizons because it wouldn't actually make them much money because the community would reject it. Premodern Masters would be great though, and at this point it's badly needed.

@TrevorAllenMD the bottom two are probably less known overall than shivan dragon. And this moreso seems like an argument that magic should have had a kids tv show in the 90s, which i guess? charizard was already from the massively popular pokemon IP and blue eyes popularity is entirely the show

Magic: The Gathering would’ve been 100x more iconic if it had a big legendary dragon every 20-40 year old immediately recognizes. 🐉 This was basically a requirement for any iconic ’90s-2000s IP.

@_whenisleep @lsv restrictions breeding creativity is like the number one rule of creating anything, let alone decks lol. There needs to be something constraining what you can play in your deck, and I vastly prefer ''can i make this mana work'' over ''you are only allowed to play 2 colours''

@lsv Having to build your deck partially around the idea of how to power your deck sucks and takes away from creativity in building. You and your opp being equal when it comes to play mechanically just seems so much better. If we are talking resource sys magic has to be last for me.

@WickedFridge @lsv you are significantly more likely to just say ''fuck this'' and stop playing the game. you need to be able to ramp up the complexity of the game, and with that system it's all completely frontloaded. You can't play the game without engaging with that complexity.

@WickedFridge @lsv getting mana screwed/flooded is frustrating, but the frustration shows that you care about the game you're playing. if you start playing a game and you look at your opening 7, and immediately need to decide which of these cards to turn into mana over the next couple of turns-

@lsv @RyanEffinMiles the way magic deals with powercreep has felt worse lately, so that might be outdone by another game(although I couldn't tell you which one, certainly not yugioh) at this point.

@RyanEffinMiles Certainly, I wouldn’t say it’s the best across the board. I’d have to think about exactly what though - the legend rule springs to mind as to one that’s pretty bad imo

@out_sall @lsv @Cybren what about the abject fury a casual player feels when they lose every single game in the exact same manner because they're either much worse than their opponent, or their deck is much worse. Magic has a great balance of variance and skill, and lands are a huge part of that.

@lsv @Cybren You're approaching the subject in too much of a mechanical sense, I feel, and not considering the abject fury a casual player might feel as they top deck their sixth land in a row. I personally think lands are great, but also that the kitchen table players might prefer all mdfcs
