@futarch @100YearsAgoLive It's curious that someone with "Death to America" in Arabic script as part of his or her nameplate doesn't understand the concept of women dressing appropriately in the workplace.

@DungeonNoir Colbert does really love Tolkien... but he's also one of the most political and TDS-afflicted personages in Hollywood, and I don't know that he has ever written anything other than politically-infused comedy. So I hope rather than believe he will succeed at this.

Kurtzman Trek is awful for all kinds of reasons that have nothing to do with its politics. If it stops being objectively terrible, then we can argue about how woke it should be. Star Trek was always progressive, but in an optimistic way. It was explicitly not tribal in the way that modern identity politics are. It was Roddenberry's rule that interpersonal conflict was not allowed -- the optimistic assumption was that humanity had worked out our problems and was beyond that. Kurtzman Trek is the exact opposite: it's nothing but interpersonal conflict and social grievance. It's possible for a show to have a political point of view without ramming it down the viewer's throat. The first season of Arcane checked all the woke boxes that exist, but it was also very well made and very entertaining. Star Trek could be like that... but it's not.

I've watched all of "Nu-Trek," as it's called today. I'll be blunt, being too "woke" isn't the problem for the Kurtzman era -- that's always been there. There has been hate for every iteration of Trek for a variety of reasons, including Earth being a socialist utopia. TNG was a carbon copy of TOS in season 1, and season 2 wasn't much better -- DS9 was really dark, and I didn't enjoy it as much in its first run as I do today The real reason they lost the fan base wasn't a gay Klingon in a skirt; it was lazy writing. One Trek Hill had the same baggage as Disco. The premise of The Burn was weak and poorly explained. Starfleet protocol was nonexistent, and at times the show felt like Lower Decks meets Police Academy 7—if that's the story you want to tell, bill it that way, and they will come. As long as the showrunners want blockbuster effects more than they want compelling stories, any new version of Trek is going to fail. I think we have reached Trek Fatigue again, and it may be time to shelve it until people who understand the universe are put back in charge.

@futarch @100YearsAgoLive Peterson said that it's problematic when women dress sexy in the workplace. He never said that women don't belong in the workplace.

@MAXIMUM_ODEN It's a clever and stylish commercial, but a car commercial that hides the car for 90% of its run length is a red flag.

@nerd_cookies This is a curious drumbeat that we're hearing from all over mass media entertainment: that it's the fans' responsibility to support whatever they produce. The level of entitlement is galling, but not surprising. They're finding out the hard way that this is not how it works.

@dtv20 @ThomasonTown In the image put forth by the OP as an example that this suit design can work, you basically can't see the suit. I don't think it's possible to sustain a feature-length film in which you can't see the main character's iconic costume, but if you disagree, you're welcome to try.

@AriochIV @ThomasonTown Why can't a skilled director and cinematographer do the same? And all movies (especially superhero ones), purposefully hide their flaws. So don't act like having to work around the flaws of a suit is something new. Imagine Roger Deakins working on a Batman film?

@kentbanishearl I'm not sure exactly how old the children were supposed to be, but Michael seems like the only one of the three young enough to need a babysitter, and Wendy seems plenty old enough to babysit.

@BradRTorgersen If Kurtzman's team at Paramount had tried to continue Enterprise, it would have been just as bad as Starfleet Academy. It's not the subject matter, it's the team making it. They don't know the first thing about storytelling; Star Trek to them is just a vehicle for messaging.

I agree 100% with everyone saying it's a tragedy they now waste $10M per episode on SFA when ENT didn't get a proper crescendo and finish. IIRC they were spending $2M per episode of ENT at its (rushed) finale. For the price of both seasons of SFA they could have funded ENT through a 7th and final season, with plenty of cash to spare. ENT really did deserve better than it got.

@Tuna__draws @sujian_1983 More distant objects are usually lighter, because of accumulated atmosphere between the object and the viewer, especially if there is smoke or fog. Lighting can change this, but in a uniformly lit scene the eye is wired to see darker objects as closer.
