Just saw The Odyssey. Despite what you may have heard, literally all of the criticisms by conservatives were entirely correct. The movie is just as woke as you fear, if not more so. The DEI casting is atrocious. Completely takes you out of the story right from the beginning. But even worse than that is Nolan’s decision to turn Odysseus into an anachronistic whiney, solemn shell of a man plagued by “trauma” and guilt. It’s impossible to overlook these flaws because the film itself is not terribly entertaining or well constructed. For the most part it is disjointed, dull, self-serious, disenchanted, somehow feeling both verbose and overly rushed at the same time. The dialogue is some of the worst I’ve ever heard in a “critically acclaimed” film. “On the nose” and “clunky” are descriptions that can’t even begin to describe this script. At no point in the story does Nolan ever transport the audience to the ancient world. You never feel like you’re 3,000 years in the past. You feel like you’re watching modern Americans put on a pageant, because you are. Nobody would be calling this thing a masterpiece if it was made by a director not named Christopher Nolan.

Homer's Odyssey is more historical than it is mythological by the way. Just so you know.

@TheGoodTomKing @Sandarbh_Raj I’m not particularly bothered by the casting choice that they made and ultimately liked the movie a lot on the whole but, yeah, if I were the one responsible for casting this movie then it’s probably the choice I would have made too. LOL

@JeremiahDJohns It’s definitely a very Christian message at least even if one wants to resist calling it conservative. I’d say that it ultimately is so in a kind of classical Burkean sense which is profoundly different from what unfortunately passes for conservatism these days. It’s all spite.

Saw the Odyssey last night. The irony of the right wing backlash is that this is a deeply small-c conservative film. It's about the consequences of defying the gods, and how society crumbles when we violate sacred traditions. It's such an own goal that the right hates it.

Minor thief. It helps emphasize how badly Gotham had gotten and how far it fell that even its "king & queen" were murdered like regular bystanders in a dirty alleyway. No one was safe in Gotham. Not even the Waynes.

@AriochIV @Kryptomightguy The big reveal wasn’t that Joe Chill carried out a targeted assassination on behalf of the League of Shadows but rather him being a victim of the severe economic depression they engineered to accelerate Gotham’s destruction which made him desperate enough to enter this situation.

Yes, and too many coincidences strain the credibility of the story. But, ironically... the "Jack" murderer was just a random thug who turns out to be the main villain of the story, but the "Joe" murder seemed to be a random thug but turns out to have been a targeted assassination by... the main villain of the story.

In the Odyssey they say " The Sun God" instead of Apollo. This movie is garbage.

@Art444Star It’s even very heavily implied that God smites Frollo at the end to help the outcasts as Esmeralda had prayed for earlier on. Many atheist viewers take a mile by claiming that the movie is anti-Christian from the inch of it just having a fairly nuanced approach toward religion.

A part of what makes Claude Frollo so powerful, apart from the performance and musical number, is that every character in the movie is Christian, so it's clear that his moral failing is entirely his own and that the problem isn't Christianity Which is much more interesting because it takes what would've otherwise been a lame, very 20-21st century attack on Christianity, to a story about personal moral vices vs virtues, which is timeless There are definitely stories to be told about systems and their failures, but stories about people are almost always more powerful and interesting

The movie simply is not what they so desperately want the film to be. The "woke" parts take up like 5 minutes of screen time. It's judging the beauty of a gigantic tree based on a one branch and few leaves. Complete nontroversy.
