FCA REJECTS ITS OWN WATCHDOG Around 8,000 British Steel Pension Scheme members transferred out. Almost half, 46%, did so after receiving unsuitable advice. Now the Complaints Commissioner says the @TheFCA acted too slowly, and rejects that finding. That should alarm every consumer in this country. When a regulator is told it failed victims, the public expects honesty, action, and accountability. Instead, we get denial. @BritishSteelUK workers made life changing pension decisions. Many trusted the system that was meant to protect them. Years later, the damage is still being argued over, while the regulator pushes back against criticism of its own conduct. If the regulator cannot accept findings from the Complaints Commissioner in a case this serious, what confidence should the public have that lessons will be learned before the next scandal hits? Bank of London fined puny £2m for filing fake documents with regulator to conceal its financial position. Fine reduced from £12m because that "would cause serious financial hardship." Peter Mandelson was a director until 2024. No exec fined/prosecuted. bankofengland.co.uk/news/2026/marc…

Tom Hayes is a victim of a miscarriage of justice. He was wrongly imprisoned for five and a half years. He is owed nearly £300,000 by the Government. Yet, because of internal disagreement among Government departments over who should pay, he has not seen a penny. I raised Tom's case in the @HouseofCommons earlier today 👇🏻

HMRC riddled with fraud and error yet we are supposed to give them our money.

🚨 HMRC has now FAILED its audit for more than 20 years. The National Audit Office has again qualified HMRC’s accounts because of material levels of fraud and error. They have not been able to pass their audit cleanly since tax credits were introduced in 2003/04 due to material levels of fraud and error. Look at the state of our public sector: ❌ HMRC has failed audit for 20+ years ❌ DWP has failed audit for 37 years ❌ The Cabinet Office can’t provide evidence for £7 BILLION of spending. These are the institutions that take your money, spend your money and tell you there isn’t enough of it. If any normal organisation failed its audit year after year, there would be consequences. In government, it just carries on. And then they tell you taxes need to go up.

One thing that often makes HMRC enquiries feel unfair is delay. I had a case where HMRC did not respond for well over a year because the file had supposedly gone to a technical specialist who would not engage with us at all. A complaint was eventually upheld all the way through Tier 2, and compensation was paid. It isn’t the taxpayer’s fault if HMRC choose to run a system without enough resource to progress cases properly.
