Can’t pin this as a highlight without having quoted it, so here’s a second chance for you to learn more about why we founded Arkansas Quant: / Inform fanbases with the complete picture, not just what the headlines sell / Minimize "eye-test" bias / Bring game theory to college athletics. Kiffin and Cignetti are two who actively apply game theory.

Brayden Burries is currently fifth on my big board. He’s a no doubt future all star in my mind. There’s no glaring weakness and he very well should’ve won Big 12 POTY over his teammate Jaden Bradley. Closest prospect I’ve seen to Jayson Tatum.

Winning at a high clip in modern football is sustaining and defensive coverage, not explosive plays drives, not Front 7 havoc, not Power Running success. We tested 24 stats against 581 games of college football. Filter: 2021–25, non-blueblood programs (talent rank #15+) vs Top-15 schedules. The stuff fans obsess over doesn’t predict wins: ❌ Explosive plays (r = +0.10, n.s.) ❌ Sacks / Front-7 Havoc (n.s.) ❌ Time of Possession (n.s.) ❌ Power running success (n.s.) ❌ Stuff Rate (n.s.) The boring stuff does: ✅ Turnover Margin (+0.60) ✅ Offense Success Rate (+0.57) ✅ Defense Pass Downs Success (–0.55) ✅ DB Havoc — secondary, not the pass rush (+0.45) ✅ 3rd & 4th Down conversion % Modern wins are about sustaining drives. Not splash plays. #CFB #CFBData #CollegeFootball #CFBAnalytics #SECFootball #BigTen #SportsAnalytics #AnalyticsTwitter

I think it’s very telling where Arkansas alumni move after college comparative to their peers. Choices after college are what influences that the most. I suppose you could argue the school’s job is to inform you make better choices, but if maximum pay is the objective then the right recommendation is to leave the state of Arkansas temporarily. In almost all cases. Next best scenario is the school telling people to not major in things like liberal arts or becoming elementary teachers.

@ArkansasQuant Coming from an Arkansas Grad: Paying ~$42k over 4 years to get a degree that has a 10-year median pay of $58k is one of the worst trades you could make. Just plain awful investment.

Arkansas’ alumni median income is less than 9% off from top 8 in SEC, and is ~15% higher than Ole Miss’. Arkansas’ donations as % of athletic department revenue is higher than Georgia, A&M, Kentucky, and South Carolina and just a smidgen behind LSU, Auburn, Alabama, and Florida.

New: Took a look at FY 2025 donation totals in the SEC, for football and across all sports A few notes - Overall contributions are up over last year, but football-specific donations are down a bit - Texas donors have got it - big increase at Tennessee al.com/alabamafootbal…

@mattstahl97 Alumni earnings may be a portion of the disparity, but quantity of living alumni is a bigger portion. And each athletic department’s level of effort into fundraising the masses AND top earning fans, not just one.

Saban on recruiting DBs: “man coverage and tackling at an elite level relative to national high school landscape, you cannot coach. if they don’t have those already, we don’t want them.” (paraphrase, as all rules, there are exceptions) Cignetti, Saban, Ryan Day, Chris Petersen, Urban Meyer all did common sense, intuitive things. The question is why other coaches don’t? They take pride in “we do an ____ test, and avoid all that fancy ___ test.” 🚩 for not considering anything and all as predictive signals in future competitiveness.

@ArkansasQuant This was posted before he actually answered questions. I fully expected it to be a fluff piece avoiding any hard questions while whiffing on nearly every player they are after. He did answer some tough ones so credit to him.

What are yours? - guaranteed 4+ year contracts that result in some magnitude of regression in almost every single instance, even if tiny. in and outside of sports. - high school kids getting 6-7 figure NIL deals and then transferring out after true freshman year. (obviously, there are exceptions) - fan-facing monthly conferences with AD, coaches, coordinators, head of marketing, etc. (accountability, fanbase buy-in) - zero kissing up for inside info by media members that ultimately results in fanbases being misled.

Guaranteed 7-year, 8-figure coach/staff/athletic director contracts and no accountability leading to them being disconnected from the fanbase who pays for their luxurious lifestyles. Coaches lose 8 games and walk away with generational wealth. Or they get a massive raise and then start putting personal pride over all-out competitiveness (Dabo, etc.) Players get 6-7 figure NIL deals while still in high school, and then show zero loyalty after they don’t play as a true freshman and transfer out. Pay for performance or don’t pay. Players, Chancellors, Coaches, Coordinators, S&C Coaches, GM’s, Athletic Directors - all of them.

At the summit, Nick Saban complained about how money is ruining the sport. A day earlier, Alabama's private jet flew to an airport outside Jupiter Island, where Nick Saban owns a $17.5 million home. It went up to DC, back to Florida, then returned to Tuscaloosa. foiaball.com/p/white-house-…
