Over the weekend I was on the BBC news channels globally, talking about Elon Musk's intention to rebrand Twitter to X. We're never far from the next crisis in branding. As an industry we love the potential scandal and gossip of a brand project going wrong. We're yet to see anything more than a single X be released, but already the commentary is reaching fever pitch. From where I am stood I see Elon going back to his original start-up x.com to create a super app and we should probably give him the benefit of the doubt he may well pull it off, with a string of great companies to his name. But branding has never been his strong point. Tesla for all its success is not the premium brand many think it is, from product to brand experience I see a mass market Ford like brand. With Twitter I think he's underestimated its conversion from social network to public utility and in that I don't think it's user base is going to calmly walk into the world of X.
