I've seen so many people seek happiness in all the wrong places: sex, money, drugs, fame. If philosophy has taught me one thing, it's that happiness doesn't come from those thing. Happiness comes from crushing your opponents with logic.

Since a lot of people got confused about the argument for the existence of God I posted yesterday, here's one that's even more obviously valid: P1. God exists. P2. If God exists, then God exists. C. Therefore, God exists.

You are making a fool of yourself, and you are not doing it for sex, money drugs or fame. You are not doing it by crushing your opponents with logic, because you are not a very logical person, contrary to what you believe. Do you really teach philosophy? Maybe you should ask your students what they think about your posts on X.

Developing feelings for each other and vowing to spend your lives together reduces your autonomy and is therefore a form of abuse too just btw

@JoshuaLWatson She’s basically a compatibility. We compulsorily respond to the world as it presents itself to us but through love (learning to seeing a thing/person for what it is/who they are) we can modulate our perception and thus our response.

again, i fail to see why determinism undermines the existence of genuinely loving relationships. this just seems like a total non sequitur.

@JoshuaLWatson You can't understand what might be wrong if everyone you thought loved you was only pretending to love you?

We're really not supposed to talk about this, but Socrates was a very bad philosopher. Most scholars agree that he never even read either Plato or Aristotle.

@PAHoyeck Ahhh the metaethics seminar I’m taking currently is using this book for half of the readings. We aren’t really reading any of the commentary though, just the essays.

Just finished Russ Shafer-Landau's The Fundamentals of Ethics. I have some minor gripes about it, but overall, it's quite good as an introduction to moral philosophy. Four out of five, might use it as a textbook in the future.

@luscofusch Yael Loewenstein, metaphysics. Great professor, fantastic writer, I believe Ismael was her advisor. Against the standard solution to the grandfather paradox philpapers.org/rec/LOEATS-2 She’s got a cool essay on phenomenology problems for B-theorists coming out soon I think.

It’s logic. Replace the word negative with “not”. All proposition (including mathematical props) are negative or positive (law of bivalence). So not 2 times not 2 is not not 4. And if it’s NOT “not 4” it must be 4 thanks to double negation. Just like someone who is not not hungry is hungry. If it’s not not raining, it’s raining. Same with the multiplication, it’s just numbers instead of words.

I’ve literally had math geniuses try to explain to me how a negative times a negative equals a positive, and I still don’t get it It doesn’t. If you have nothing, and then more nothing, you don’t have something. You have nothing Math is a psyop!

@RobertTalisse A lot of their discography is slightly overrated ill grant that...but Undertow is a great album. As far as debut albums go, Undertow is up there with Facelift for the best debut of that era IMHO
