@nicbarkeragain I feel like I hardly ever remember anything unless it's connected to several other ideas. Remembering things is a process of remembering the cloud of ideas surrounding that thing, until I have enough to go "yeah that's probably right"

I suspect I'm not alone in having a memory like this: - If I deeply understand something, I can remember it forever after only hearing it once - If I don't, no amount of revision makes me remember it Critical debuff during school / university, turned into a superpower later on 😅

"Control how your data is shared" is such a dystopian phrase. It presupposes that the data will be shared, and all you can do is control how widely.

@rfleury I'm confused about your meaning here. Did their market share shrink because of the ongoing lawsuit or regardless?

@AsafGartner In virtually every historic example of antitrust lawsuits in the US, the market share of the defendant shrunk from 90%+ to around half *before the lawsuits concluded*. The market selects for competition in the absence of regulation.

Eliminating anticompetitive behavior with regulation by force — as opposed to competition — does little more than enable regulatory capture, and the future use of the government to enforce anticompetitive measures by law.
Tim Sweeney@TimSweeneyEpic

The latest nationalist crap planted by Apple lobbyists: The US shouldn’t regulate anticompetitive practices of tech monopolies “because China”. But Apple’s app distribution monopoly is what gives China the ability to censor apps, as iOS blocks apps from all other sources.

@CaptainKraft I think it's overall easier to build webapps without frameworks. Start small by implementing a few interactions directly and go from there. I'll be happy to answer more specific questions on the @handmade_net discord.

Is there a simple way to build webapps without tons of frameworks? I'm not sure where to start...

These are apparently actual slides that people in charge of $100bln of investment money used as part of their earnings call. You really can't parody venture capital at this point (via @matt_levine).

@VyprVPN How can I reach your dev team? I need to report a bug and your customer support is being very unhelpful.

Other than just wanting to be able to copy other people's work as they often do all the time anyway, I'm not sure I understand major tech giants' argument as to why APIs would not be copyrightable. They are, if anything, much harder to make well than their implementations.

@cmuratori The "solution" is to display your own thumbnail and only replace it with the youtube iframe after the user clicks it. It's been an issue for many years and I doubt they'll ever fix it.

And by the way, we use the absolute minimum of Google anything - we don't use analytics, we don't use ads, we don't use anything. It's _just_ a single YouTube embed on some of our sites to show a trailer. That's it. And _just that_ causes pages to take up to two seconds to load!

Dear @google: what if you actually ran your PageSpeed Insights utility on your own code, and then fixed it so it wasn't epic garbage? Here's our website, for example. 100% of the speed issues you report _are in your own code_:

@jackmott42 @danielben It could make code more fragile. For instance, I have old Scheme code (which has bitmaps embedded in the code file), and I can't get it to work with a modern version of DrScheme.

Programming thought: function overloading is not a good language feature: 1) Using it means poorer code self-documentation bc it's harder to understand on which context to use one or the other overload 2) It relies on IDEs to even understand what overloads are available

I’m calling for an end to holy war against code duplication. We convince young developers and engineers that it’s the worst thing ever, when time teaches all of us that it is, the vast majority of the time, duplication preferable to dependency.
