The state of our roads throughout the country is horrific. City centres across the country have deteriorated. We still have hospitals that are understaffed, filthy and undignified. Many townships could easily be mistaken for refuse dumping sites. Violent crime persists and so are its cousin’s poverty and unemployment. Provinces like the Eastern Cape, Free State, North West, Northern Cape can only be described with one word: hopelessness! Those of us who can afford anything ( though we living hand-to-mouth) are drowning in debt, stretched beyond reason as we carry children, siblings, cousins and extended family members. People are drinking themselves senseless, not always for pleasure or lack of discipline , but to numb the pain, the despair and the daily humiliation of survival. Let us put political loyalties aside for once and ask ourselves honestly: what have we done to deserve this? More importantly, what radical steps must we now take to drag ourselves out of this stinking sewer we have been forced to embrace as being normal? If political parties are our only vehicle to effect positive change. What is it within the operational structure of the political system that needs to change so that we the citizenry can be better empowered in holding political parties accountable instead of having to wait for 5 year voting cycles.
