@dogwoodblooms This is honestly so upsetting to read. I had something very similar happen to me a few months ago when I graduated early. From former graduate to your daughter please tell her that this milestone in her life is so important and that her hard work does not go unnoticed.

Let’s have a little heart-to-heart, y’all:
I had it hard. I was born to teenage parents who had no idea what they were doing. They screwed up a lot before they got their mess together.
That’s true—but it’s also true that every cloud has its silver lining. Mine was my family.
I was blessed with the world’s greatest grandparents.
Mamaw and Papaw would’ve walked through fire for me. They always showed up. They always had time. They never let me down—not once.
Grandma and Granddaddy didn’t have much, but they were exactly the same: absolutely in love with me. And I always knew it.
My aunts and uncles were around. Holidays? Birthdays? They were right there. They didn’t turn down invitations or miss special occasions.
Cousins? I hit the jackpot. Some folks have throngs of friends. Not me. I was born with natural-born besties. These people would fight for me. Some of them have. They stand by my side and lift me up when I’m down.
I’m beyond grateful.
But I look at my girls and wonder: has the Southern family fallen?
My baby girl graduates in two weeks. She invited 11 people—the 11 she loves most, all family. It’s not a big request: less than two hours to witness her greatest accomplishment so far.
Five can’t make it. Two have to leave early.
My heart hurts.
It’s repugnant to me that my baby will have to face her relatives later knowing something trivial was more important to them than one of the most monumental moments in her life.
Maybe I’m too idealistic. Maybe I came from a too strongly bonded family. Maybe I’m too protective a mother.
But y’all… this ain’t how family is supposed to be.
Family is supposed to be there.
Otherwise, they’re not really family.

Happy 21st Anniversary to the wonderful Mr. Baranski!
I don’t deserve him but I’m thrilled to be his wife, most days. 😉 We actually met at work and started flirting on IBM’s IM system while talking about NC State football. The LORD was our real matchmaker though because I used to go to my husband’s church many years earlier.

Seven facts about me:
1) I only became an engineer because my big brother told me to major in engineering.
2) Homeschooled our daughter from 4th to 12th grade. She just got the highest grade in her college English class this week so I wasn’t a complete failure. 😉
3) In college, won an award from Engineers’ Council for just being me: funny, helpful, and nice.
4) Was once President of my local engineering society.
5) Grew up hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
6) Can talk about sports, especially NC State, and genealogy for hours.
7) Used to manage our church’s tech team for our 4800+ member church.
