Today I designated Iran as a State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention. For decades the Iranian regime has cruelly detained innocent Americans and citizens of other nations to use as political leverage. Iran must end this abhorrent practice and immediately free all unjustly detained Americans.
This #IWD I’m making women and girls a key priority for the FCDO. Tackling the global emergency of violence and abuse, boosting women’s political and economic participation, and unlocking the potential of girls everywhere will now be at the heart of UK foreign policy.
Today, I am designating Afghanistan as a State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention. The Taliban continue to use terrorist tactics to seek policy concessions, but it won’t work under this administration. The Taliban must release Dennis Coyle, Mahmood Habibi, and all Americans unjustly detained in Afghanistan.
Also Israel did NOT support Hamas per se. Israel was the military occupation in Gaza when Hamas (before it was known as Hamas) wanted to build charitable and cultural societies and orgs including Gaza’s first university in the late 70s. There was no way to start these orgs without an Israeli occupation permit. That is not support. But rivals like FATEh always falsely cited that as Israel establishing Hamas or supporting Hamas. Around the time Hamas had a secret movement and even a small military arm that came after Israeli collaborators in the early 80s and even bought guns to fight Israel back. This is when their founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin was arrested. Liberal using the “Israel founded or funded Hamas” argument is racist and deprives Palestinians of their agency. It’s not the argument you think it is.
