I use ChatGPT to help with SQL scripting (snowflake and sql server). I feed it columns and the first row of data I am looking to query. 95% of the time GPT 3.5 is good enough to get me a working script in <10 prompts. This week I stumped it.

@gaganbiyani @mayowaoshin It's incredible how many new products and technology are emerging from the advances in AI and LLMs! Our team at AskEdith have specifically been working on a solution for product and business users to be able to query their data and build dashboards by simply asking questions!

SQL is going to die at the hands of an AI. I’m serious. @mayowaoshin is already doing this. Takes your company’s data and ingests it into ChatGPT. Then, you can create a chatbot for the data and just ask it questions using natural language. This video demoes the output. 🤯

@dignifiedpauper Definitely agree! Product and business users can simply ask for their data and derive insights better AND quicker. Data analysts can spend less time on ad hoc queries

I feel like we should should pause all AI work until the world has created better tooling for interacting with SQL databases, is anyone working on this? How is DBeaver considered SOTA in this field?!

One more area where LLMs can shine is SQL. Only few understand SQL syntax enough to write queries, but everyone wants that fancy dashboard or report. So, business intelligence, data engineering, etc… could be simplified by AI. One should watch for the query optimizations though.

I'm not an expert in SQL and writing a query like this one would have taken me a lot of time (visiting multiple websites, several query attempts, finding right search term, etc). But with ChatGPT, it took me just two prompts and ~1 min ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@SimonTaranto @stripe oof, this remains a sore subject. but, for the first time, i'm optimistic about sql tools with the generative ai stuff. especially for the harder problem of structuring data, less query/viz part. i remain convinced most successful companies are successful despite of their data.

Just talked to a famous investor you all would know who told me he just made his first AI/crypto investment. Says there are about 30 more in offing. Every investor I talk with has been forced to come up with a new thesis in the past two months and now is starting to act on the new thesis. Lots of AI startups to come. Yours next?

I would wager that given more comprehensive tuning / prompting on a domain specific database the LLM would do as well as a human with relevant knowledge of SQL. Moreover with said tuning the LLM would be invaluable in allowing laymen to run queries ( which would otherwise require support from a professional ).

@9zemian5 @flaviocopes One issue that comes up in production databases/data warehouses is that there are just too many tables to fit in a prompt. We're currently exploring solutions to overcome this limitation

@flaviocopes I think writing SQL is the first field of programming that will be fully replaced by AI. With a simple prompt and a proper tables description you can get your queries (even the complex ones) in 10 seconds

Yeah but... for example, I can't imagine a world in which people won't want to write structured, strict queries for databases and expect a completely repeatable, deterministic response. Expressing most SQL queries in natural language would surely be longer than the SQL.
Sam Altman@sama

the arc of technology is towards simplicity. talking to a computer like we talk to a human is pretty simple. we have come a long way from punch cards to natural language, but within the paradigm of natural language, we can now go so far.

AI is an extraordinarily sophisticated autocomplete, but humans will still be in the driving seat for the foreseeable future. Solving the low hanging fruit can get us to a 60% Co-Pilot acceptance rate.... still need humans tho!

From a former colleague of mine, a great use case for AI: translating requests from the business into SQL without needing to wait for an analyst to do it for oneself (or understand the schema in some part of the org they haven't been exposed to before).
Jackie Xu@jackiexu_

Ask your data any question using plain English. @getLogicLoop uses AI to generate SQL queries you can run directly on own unique data schema to find what you’re looking for. Manually writing SQL can be tedious. Business users can use AI to help query and analyze data faster and easier.
