@LundukeJournal This doesn’t make any actual sense. Especially for extremely weak embedded systems I bet this rust rewrite will have a major performance impact. I’m not a fan of rust whatsoever but at least keep it contained to the normal desktop PC focused distros.
According to recent changes, Debian is planning to drop GNU Coreutils in favor of the “uutils” Rust clones.
“Debian is also following Ubuntu's path toward making uutils the default,” according to the commit.
The timing of this change is suspicious, considering the recent, critical, show-stopper grade bugs in “uutils” which have been plaguing Ubuntu.
This change was submitted by @SylvestreLedru, the founder of the “uutils” project and Director of Engineering at Mozilla.
It is also suggested that this forced adoption of Rust-based clones was intended to be “inherited by downstream” distributions, such as Raspbian and Kali.
“The package is also inherited by downstream Debian-based distributions including Raspbian, Kali Linux, Parrot OS, PureOS, and deepin 23.”
After a small number of messages, critical of dropping GNU Coreutils, was posted to the Debian Developer mailing list, the Uutils lead, and Mozilla Director, stated that polite criticism “feels like harassment” and “I am not interested to have this conversation”.
@_Stocko_ How did you model the actual spline teeth? I tried to do that in a model very similar to yours and it ended up printing as basically a circle that didn’t fit on the servo
@jlcjak I have two of the cheaper yihua stations, one soldering iron and one hot air, both under $100. They’ve been surprisingly reliable and very nice to use
This Soldering Station SAVED MY LIFE
JCB style tips (C245 and C210, two irons) for ultra fast heating and automatic temp lowering
Hot air gun with station integrated fan for more versatility in gripping the gun.
And a ton of tips for both the irons and hot air. Insane value, experience is comparible to a $1-2k setup, but I've only had it for 6 months so I can't speak on long term reliability
A critical bug in the Rust clone of the “cp” command is causing Ubuntu builds to fail.
In order to get Ubuntu builds to work again, the Ubuntu team decided to revert back to the GNU Coreutils version of “cp”.
This came after Canonical’s VP of Engineering stated that ALL (100%) of the GNU “Coreutils” would be replaced with Rust-based (MIT licensed) clones… by the release of Ubuntu 26.10.
That’s 4 months from now.

Rip dbrand, they have confirmed that its Companion Cube collectible will no longer be sold, and all existing orders will be refunded after Valve requested that the product be taken down.
According to dbrand, Valve stated that the Companion Cube is Valve intellectual property and that dbrand does not have a license to use it.
“They stated that the Companion Cube is Valve intellectual property, for which dbrand does not have a license.”
Customers who placed an order will receive a full refund.

@lauriewired I don’t think this will really be the “default” anytime soon. Especially for VR where any added input or frame lag at all (especially 100+ms worth) is extremely noticeable and motion sickness inducing
you’ll get mad at me for saying this…but cloud gaming is so obviously more economically efficient than physical hardware I think it’s going to be the default soon.
your home console / pc is idle 90%+ of the day. meanwhile, data centers targets what, 5%, maybe at worst 10% idle.
every second a cloud gamer isn’t gaming, that hardware is being used for someone else, training, etc.
I think there should be a new measurement, something like cost-per effective FLOP hour that takes into account the TCO + effective utilization.
If a gamer spends $500 on a GPU, uses it for 3 years, but it’s only fully active ~5% of that period…the cost-per relative FLOP hour is crazy high! Meanwhile, a $50,000 datacenter GPU might have a *LOWER* cost-per FLOP hour just because the effective utilization is 90+%.
@FossPrime@Dexerto@HardwareSteam@valvesoftware Yes that’s basically what I’m saying. Use vision fused with IMU data to figure out the controllers actual orientation and and move it more accurately
@AspaceN@Dexerto@HardwareSteam@valvesoftware This is not a Mercedes Benz. Running both motors at the exact same speed to try and go forward will often steer just as much as you move forward, in unpredictable ways. Luckily there is an IMU and Gyros that can help correct course.
@Adeafguy@MizoChris The part in circle on the right is a retaining bracket for the ribbon cable, the screw hole is to allow for bigger SSDs in the same slot
STEAM MACHINE NVMe upgradable when it comes to storage?
One of the most asked questions, at first when looking on the website, Valve mentions expandable storage from a "microsd".
Looking closer upon the machine, it seems that IT DOES contain a NVMe where it can be 100% swappable. The Steam Machine contains a M.2 2230 instead of the standard 2280.
Steam Frame has passthrough, but not color passthrough.
• Steam Frame uses monochrome passthrough
• That means black-and-white, not full color
• Valve seems focused more on gaming, streaming, and price than mixed reality
• Color passthrough would have made it feel more natural for room awareness
• But for pure VR gaming, this might not matter to everyone
For those interested in Steam Frame, does color passthrough actually matter to you?
