@GameOverThirty Another chaotic clusterfuck as always. Microsoft are experts at it. Laying off 3200 but “only 1600 now” is peak

There's no proper way to run a lay off. It will always feel like chaos at some level. In fact, doing it swiftly, and getting to the point, is generally accepted as the cleanest approach possible. No one should celebrate that, but let's understand that a layoff always look messy and it leaves people questioning what is going on around them. As for people claiming Xbox is now asking people to start wearing more "hats" and become generalists? That completely tracks with what is expected with an industry labor correction. You are going to continue to see this across the games industry. The industry, in many parts, became over-specialized. As fidelity and expectations changed over the last year, more people were able to make careers out of being good at one or two skills. I'm not saying that's right, or wrong, but the last 100 years are filled with examples of the labor industry swinging back and forth between specialists and generalists. As you can probably imagine, specialist models become increasingly expensive to maintain at a cost level. If the person working on environments can't work on face textures, it creates rework loops and barriers in the process. As the games industry continues to shift to a "ramp up - ramp down" model, expect core teams to encourage a generalist skill set within their ranks. gamedeveloper.com/production/-go…

⚙️ How Grid Trading Works on Aster A grid places buy and sell orders across a price range you set, buying as price dips and selling as it rebounds to capture the swings while the market ranges. 1. Pick a pair 2. Set your upper and lower price range and then the number of grids 3. Choose a strategy: Neutral for sideways, Long for bullish, Short for bearish 4. Launch, and the bot works every level automatically

I loved chatting with Sean about Netflix's Unhinged. I'm quite excited by what Netflix is doing. Rather than competing with PlayStation etc, it's trying to win over people who might not be traditional console/PC gamers. And Unhinged is a glimpse into how they might do that
The Game Business@thegamebusiness

We speak to Netflix's head of narrative games Sean Krankel about the release of hit horror game Unhinged. We chat building games for Netflix's 700m users (some of which are non-gamers) and the future of narrative games on the streaming platform. thegamebusiness.com/p/interview-ne…

Seeing more layoffs at Splitgate developer 1047 on Linkedin today. That's one of the quieter big industry fumble stories. $100M investment for Splitgate 2 which is dead in the water unfortunately, and their new game Empulse isn't doing hot either.

I feel like every week I see a podcast with a former Xbox or Sony employee sharing thoughts on the current state of the business. I feel like sure there is history to be shared and viewpoints that potentially have value but also it feels like we are in unprecedented times and maybe those insights are outdated?

@chhopsky @kiwitalkz I think scale just makes it pointless now as well. When it was a few people (and we were 20) it was effective. Any large project today you’re just wasting your time.

@rpwbrowne @kiwitalkz yeah.. it’s unfortunate because it really doesn’t take long for your overall velocity to tank worse than if you’d never crunched at all but completion urgency comes for us all

During the development of Max Payne 3 the crunch got to a point where it was so intense that producer John Ricchio watched an animator for 40 minutes trying to animate a simple cutscene of a bartender putting a cork into a bottle and he couldn't do it and kept falling asleep at his desk. In the end John told him to go home to sleep. The messed up part is these types of crunch stories aren't even rare, I've heard countless stories like this happening at other AAA studios.

35 years ago, I played Battletech at a facility in Chicago. It was incredible: Proper first-person multiplayer mech combat using high-end networked PCs and played from inside enclosed pods. Difficult to articulate just how astonishing this experience was. Years ahead of its time.

@flooszn This basically comes from history ; largely from Americans being stationed here in WWII when yes, food was atrocious naturally. It didn't recover for a long time after either ; food in the UK got steadily better from the 70s, by the 90s was absolutely World class.
