100kw data center sat. Bonkers. And future sats in the megawatt range (10x bonkers). Bigger is better with these guys for AI operations, crowding, mass ratios.

@KenKirtland17 Yeah I'm trying to remember when specifically. Did they even stream the first launch? Lol.

@DJSnM I do wonder why aren't critical screw fittings like these lockwired to prevent them from backing out?

If you’re ever diving into NASA history and you read about Dryden… that’s Armstrong! I dont know if that’s common knowledge or actually worth saying but the breaking of the sound barrier and so many other aerospace milestones took place in the skies above the mojave desert.
NASA Aeronautics@NASAaero

NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center is where experimental flight takes off. ✈️ Located at Edwards Air Force Base in California’s Mojave Desert, Armstrong operates within the nation’s largest secure flight test range—spanning about 470 square miles and including Rogers Dry Lake’s 44-square-mile natural runway. The vast airspace allows NASA teams to safely conduct complex flight testing. Learn more: go.nasa.gov/4boOedj

Side note, with respect, to those who run the @NASAaero account, on the off-chance you see this… There are a plethora of cooler aircraft to post a shot of for something like this… F-15 STOL/MTD, SR-71, F-16 VISTA, X-15, heck if you want something modern the image used in the post could be an a2a shot of the X-59 low boom demonstrator over rogers lake. That doesn’t exist yet? Ok, why not? Fix that. At the very least, illustrating experimental flight over the mojave with a cessna when youre frickin NASA is uhhhh…. Suboptimal.

@DrPhiltill Tbc I'm generally in favor of the program, though. But think some caution is warranted.

@DrPhiltill "I care a lot about the atmosphere but..." Is not the greatest start to most sentences lol. I am concerned what environmental impact such an enormous program could cause and I do think we need to study it thoroughly before "lets try it and see"

I care a lot about the atmosphere but IMO a short-term compromise must be made. The US can’t build up its power grid fast enough to catch China, so I’m betting that US compute (and therefore democracy across the globe) will depend crucially on SpaceX’s million AI satellites.
Jonathan O’Callaghan@Astro_Jonny

SpaceX's 1 million AI satellites could cause "massive ozone depletion" and change the night sky forever, but the FCC has no requirement to check before approving them. Astronomers are now scrambling to submit their concerns. Story by me in New Scientist newscientist.com/article/2516975

@DJSnM Might need to add a layer of "atmosphere"... Or ya know... Just accidentally create an atomized layer of satellite debris and it be a literal atmospheric layer.

It’s called space because it’s got a lot of spaces but if we launch a million satellites into LEO that’s a lot of stuff. Do we start talking about outer stuff instead. What’s the threshold for space vs stuff?

@farmer_east1989 @Anton__Chigurh_ @Alexphysics13 I understand all of this quite well and am a big fan and advocate of spaceflight. But there does come a point where you're juggling too many things at a time. Your system must account for coincident random failures and actively manage them.

@Anton__Chigurh_ @AstroSkeptic @Alexphysics13 The visual representations of satellite constellations we get online vastly overstate the size of satellites. I get it - they need to represent them somehow but a typical image - if to scale - often shows a satellite as the size of a city.

@getnickwright Unfortunately I know many real humans that say horrible things to each other in person. Many advocating for war, even genocide. So no... I'm not too hopeful for many to see horror for what it is.

I truly implore folks not to argue with “people” on this app about important events. You’re going to drown in a sea of bots, paid foreign accounts cosplaying as Americans, and truly the worst of our citizenry. Talk to real human beings in real life. You’ll feel better.

I asked DOE yesterday if they could provide more details about their agreement with NASA to work on fission surface power for the Moon, and they declined. Now I understand why.
