Angela Merkel, former German Chancellor, received today the newly created European Order of Merit of the European Parliament. Unpopular opinion: she should not have been awarded it. Yes, she went through many EU crisis through her tenure and had a stabilising demeanor. BUT... Her main way to success was to wait for problems to go away instead of tackling them. She almost got a EU country kicked out of the Eurozone because the idea of solidarity was toxic for her country (though the Greeks didn't do themselves any favour). She put her country in dependencies (Russian gas, Chinese market) that we collectively paid the price for later when it blew up in our face. She left Macron on read when we still had a (short) window of opportunity to relaunch an ambitious EU reform process that is now impossible to do. She aggravated a migration crisis when (for decent reasons) she decided to have an open door policy but failed to coordinate with her European partners. Etc... Merkel was undoubtedly an important figure of her time, but as pro-European as she is, she certainly didn't push Europe forward when she could have (unless and until her back was against the wall).
