The Times editorial board points out that 12 people Trump pardoned for January 6 offenses have been rearrested in the 14 months since Trump pardoned them. Trump pardoned 1270 January 6 convicts. That is a rate of 1% of pardon recipients reoffending.
Among arrestees free pending trial in New York City under the 2018 bail reform, about 22% are rearrested within 6 months. The people we need to worry about becoming repeat offenders after being absolved of punishment are not the J6ers.
I am all for a punitive justice system. I am all for mass incarceration. But to pretend the J6 offenders are dangerous recidivists who need to be locked up while it’s fine to immediately release most criminals arrested by the NYPD is profoundly ridiculous.

You are comparing apples and oranges here, by mentioning lower risk post-Omicron but comparing to post-vaccine risks of the initial doses given pre-Omicron and mentioning mandates that were not really in effect post-Omicron at all. Any fair and careful benefit/risk must split into 2021 during initial rollout, and 2022+ post-Omicron when we are talking primarily about boosters. Children were given their 1st two doses of mRNA or the doses of viral vectors in 2021 pre-Omicron -- which is both when the risks of COVID-19 were higher and when the myocarditis and VITT were mostly observed. So you'd have to acknowledge the risk of COVID-19 in 2021 to fairly evaluate the vaccine rollouts in 2021, right? And post-Omicron, doses of vaccines would mostly be boosters (and typically given mostly to higher risk kids, and I don't think these were mandated ANYWHERE). And note that the viral vectors were generally not given anymore, so the VITT is not relevant to that time period, and the risk of myocarditis much lower after mRNA boosters than primary doses, especially after the effective dose was reduced for teens. Surely, you account for all of this when comparing to the COVID-19 risks in this age group during Omicron. And do you really stand by your comments that the risks of mRNA vaccine boosters (for those who voluntarily received them, since they really were not mandated after Omicron) outweigh the risks of Omicron infections for this group?

I can't square the cognitive dissonance of those who insist we wildly overreacted to COVID... yet also obsess over “lab leak” + “gain-of-function.” If a lab accidentally released a virus no worse than a bad cold, then don’t we have much bigger fish to fry? 🤷🏽♂️

A Canadian math education association put “2 + 2 = 4” on a white supremacy slide.
In 2022, the Ontario Mathematics Coordinators Association ran a professional development webinar for math teachers across Ontario school boards.
The slide was titled “White Supremacy in Math Education.” Under “covert white supremacy” it listed: standardized testing, “I don’t see colour in my math class,” and “Of course math is neutral because 2 + 2 = 4.”
Not a fringe blog. Not a parody account. A professional association shaping how math teachers are trained.
When the slide went viral in 2023, the OMCA released an official statement confirming that 2 + 2 = 4 is mathematically true — but argued the equation can be “weaponized to uphold bigotry and white supremacy ideology” when used to claim math is politically neutral.
Their defense of the slide was the slide.
Someone once wrote about a party that demanded citizens believe two and two made five.
In 2022, a professional math association wrote a slide that said believing math is neutral is white supremacy.
One was fiction. The other was professional development.

Today's commentary. Let me give you a hypothetical. A woman is walking to her car in a parking garage in Seattle. A man grabs her purse, shoves her to the ground, and runs. She breaks her wrist in the fall. She’s shaken for months. She stops going out at night.
In New York, that’s a robbery. In Boston, that’s an assault. In Chicago, the guy who did it is a criminal. Direct. Clear. Subject, verb, object. He did this to her.
In Seattle, according to King County Public Health’s official language guide, the man who did this is a “justice-impacted individual.” What he did created certain outcomes. The system became involved. Things occurred.

NEW: Student athlete left paralyzed after he was shot at a Waffle House while coming to his friend’s aid.
18-year-old Seth Jackson had reportedly tried helping his friend who was being attacked by a group of teens.
When one of the teens pulled a gun out, Jackson started running but was then shot as he tried running away, his family says.
The Richardson, Texas teen will never walk again.
Charles Webster, 17, and Taylor Griffin, 18 were both charged with engaging in organized criminal activity. The shooter has not yet been caught.
Jackson is a straight-A student, had two jobs and recently committed to the University of Houston.
He suffered a ruptured lung and aorta, fractured ribs and a shattered spinal cord.

Dr. Dan Edney, reported to be in the running for head of CDC, says he gets a “pertussis booster” regularly “to protect other infants and children that might be around me, that I’m not spreading pertussis to them.”
This “doctor” doesn’t even know that pertussis vaccine, while reducing symptoms, does not prevent infection and transmission. Hence, getting this product makes him more likely to remain around infants and children and unknowingly spreading pertussis. That’s just the basic science.
