@HowEPhil True, and don’t forget that the statistics both for the actual and the image you show include a BRT lane which moves even more per hour and reaches people who cannot or will not bike, and bikers who wish to be seated and protected from the elements when that is their choice.

Reminder- cities will rarely add a new vehicular lane, yet alone a whole new road for 🚗. And when they do, it barely moves the needle on people who can move around the city. In contrast, removing a vehicular lane for a bike lane increases how many get around by over 2x per HOUR

Friendly debate about Beltline rail between the the group advocating for it (Beltline Rail Now) and against it (I've forgotten their name... doesn't really matter). You can read the transcript or watch the video. Or ignore it and just build the train. gsulawreview.org/post/2714-belt…

The story of the Atlanta Streetcar's ridership is one largely of service cuts and a bad fare system. The data bears this out. Not to say we shouldn't improve land use, but neither should we let land use mask actionable changes that could have much more immediate impact.

There are seven light-rail systems in the U.S. with coverage of less than three miles, including the Atlanta Streetcar. None of them had ridership anywhere near as low as ATL's in 2023. Makes you wonder if the sad land-use around much of the Atlanta Streetcar plays a role.

@LathburyJason Great data Jason! The downtown streetcar is easily fixed with the ideas you put forward and a few more. State of the art vehicles themselves as the fleet expands with the route are part of the answer too.

@mwgarbett Matt, you were and are right- the Streetcar East Extension only works if the project it extends- the Downtown Streetcar- is fixed. It’s been the plan to build light rail on the BeltLine on the Eastside Trail first. It will happen. BRN is working for both. beltlinerailnow.com/news/2023/2/16…

Years ago, at a meeting discussing the Streetcar, I famously told city officials, "You have to get this right. If you get this wrong, it will hamper support for expansion for years to come." And I'm happy to say that statement was widely reported, the city listened, and... /1

@LathburyJason The problem with this idea is that the difference (200 million dollars) will not in any way come from the FTA because they would either match for light rail or BRT but not the difference to be used on any items relating to the community improvements and road improvements.

As the decision shifted through the news, though, MARTA settled on… not using the money for more transit. Instead, it would fund a collection of road-improvement projects within the corridor, spending just as much originally allocated, but not on transit. reporternewspapers.net/2022/03/17/mar…

I’ve spent significant time (and words) discussing the run-up history to light rail on Campbellton, and now I want to spend some time discussing the functional problems of how MARTA’s carried out its planning, and impacts for other projects.
Test Chamber Defect@LathburyJason

With the inevitable MARTA Board approval of Campbellton BRT on the horizon, I want to take some time to outline why I STILL think that this is a bad decision, and why this project showcases fundamental problems with MARTA planning. 🧵
