Hot take—Continuing to say that we as accounting professionals are the problem and that we just need to plan harder and push back is like saying stay out of the way of your abuser. The bottom line is we work with a broken tax system, with antiquated 1950s deadlines and even with technology Henry Bloch couldn’t imagine we still can prepare more returns more quickly than they could with three layers of forms and carbon paper. The code is too complex, the public is not savvy, social media is more trusted than tax pros with credentials no matter what they are. Associations need to be activists for us not just continuing ed providers and social hour planners. Everyone can see this industry has problems but AICPA, NAEA, NSAcct, and NATP are all focused on selling insurance, classes and raising dues. If you want to innovate, figure out how to battle Congress and Intuit, that’s what the profession needs.
