Read my report of the Lenten Retreat on Hieromonk Seraphim Rose this past Sunday at Holy Virgin Cathedral (ROCOR) in San Francisco. A very significant and beautiful event with two revered clerics who knew Fr. Seraphim personally. wadiocese.org/news/1093/grea…

@MitchWaystone It’s helpful to know the Church’s self identity. It’s harmful to blur the lines and present a “squishy” Orthodoxy. Of course, this must done in a loving way.

@AudioScribeOW Do you see the risk mainly to the weak, new converts & the Church’s clear witness, especially in Protestant areas?

“What about ecumenism? Entertain whatever abstract ideas you like about ‘good ecumenism,’ —can’t you see that those who invented it understand it in a heretical sense, and they see Orthodox involvement in it as a more or less grudging acceptance of that heresy?—or that…

"On the See of Constantinople, [there sat] Paul the Confessor, Makedonios, Gregory the Theologian, John Chrysostom, Nestorios, Proclus, Flavian, Germanos. Some [of them] shone with holiness and Orthodoxy, others were heresiarchs, yet the Church remained Orthodox" - St. John

It is my firm conviction that Patriarch Athenagoras was a saint. His love, magnanimity, pious service to the Church and to his neighbor, and peace of spirit and soul are testaments to the grace of God that was given to him and mediated through him. Sadly, few figures in modern Orthodoxy have been so slandered and defamed, often on the basis of obvious distortions. Regardless, when you read about him, and I encourage everyone to do so, you are struck by the depth of his love and devotion. The Church has rarely had such a great leader, of whom we are unworthy. But even in repose, he speaks to us and inspires us to pursue unity in the love of Christ above all. Athenagoras, pray for us!

@patitsas That’s possible. Still the text says he was proclaimed “blessed”. If you’re correct it’s an odd way of communicating that.

The City as Liturgy...
@AudioScribeOW From the text, it appears that the answer to your question is the fact that the Bishop numbered him as a St at the 40th Day memorial. This act was the thing that people mostly forgot about for 16 years.

This is from Kontakion 13 in an akathist to Fr. Seraphim Rose (not the one I wrote): "By most this passed unnoticed until, after sixteen years you were proclaimed 'Blessed'." Does anyone know what event from 16 years after his repose this is referring to?

@Orthodoxy2019 Interesting. That text has been online for at least 7 years and no synod glorified him (to my knowledge) until ROCOR-A last year.

@AudioScribeOW The Akathist says: THIS IS THE OFFICIAL TEXT OF THE HOLY SYNOD OF THE TRADITIONAL CHURCH OF GREECE - G.O.C. But who knows which of the 8,000 OC Synods that is, but I guess maybe they canonized him?

others and ultimately the ROCOR bishops, and be the akathist used in churches during and after his glorification. God help all those involved in bringing about the glorfication of Hiermonk Seraphim of Platina.

@Victor475246832 That doesnt address my tweets, maybe you haven't read them. Also, the length of time a local church has existed is not a guarantee against being infected with heresy. The Roman Catholic church is a good example. And not all Greeks are ecumenists, many resist ecumenism, in fact.

@AudioScribeOW You call us Greeks “ecumenists” but our church is older than the Russian church and we speak the same language as our Lord Jesus Christ and the holy apostles, the Greek language. Even as so called “ecumenists” the Greek church is more traditional than the Russian church.

Today our priest quoted Fr. Seraphim Rose in the homily and I spoke with many people who are excited about ROCOR’s decision to glorify him as a saint. Awesome Sunday.

@Victor475246832 of serving God into all kinds of factions and jealousies and attempts at revenge. How much hope there is for those who do not trust in themselves too much and are not overly-critical of others!" Letter dated April 24/May 7, 1974

@Victor475246832 love and understanding—and that statement, I realize, could have come straight from the lips of some ecumenist, which only shows how difficult the path of true Orthodoxy has become in our days. Good heavens! What is happening to people? How easily one gets dragged off the path...
