Today, @MountSinaiNYC announced a team of Mount Sinai neurosurgeons and neuroscientists are the first in New York to study a new brain-computer interface (BCI) that’s engineered to map a large area of the brain’s surface at resolutions hundreds of times more detailed than typical arrays used in neurosurgical procedures. The Layer 7 Cortical Interface, developed by Precision Neuroscience Corporation, contains 1,024 tiny electrodes spanning an area of 1.5 square centimeter, embedded in a flexible film that conforms to the brain’s surface and was designed to be implanted and removed by neurosurgeons without damaging brain tissue. The ultimate goal of the device is to aid in restoring function to patients with debilitating neurological conditions by enabling them to operate digital devices using only their thoughts. At Mount Sinai, we are unlocking new frontiers in neurosurgery and shaping a brighter future for patients worldwide. The computer security research community tends to chase complex attacks while ignoring gaping low-tech flaws. In a new paper, @kvn_l33 and I advocate for security policy audits, which we think should be a whole area of research that doesn’t exist today: arxiv.org/pdf/2207.11306…
