Australia welcomes the OPCW Executive Council’s decision to reinstate Syria’s rights and privileges under the CWC. As a co-sponsor of this historic decision, Australia supports efforts that strengthen the integrity of the Convention and a world free of chemical weapons. #OPCW

The OPCW’s Executive Council today adopted a decision to reinstate the rights and privileges of Syria under the #ChemicalWeaponsConvention, recognising the progress made by the Syrian authorities in addressing the chemical weapons programme inherited by the former regime. The Council also adopted three related decisions to advance the closure of the Syrian chemical weapons dossier: - a chemical weapons destruction verification plan for Al Qutayfah - two separate facility agreements for the systematic verification of the Al Qutayfah and Homs chemical weapons storage facilities Read more: visitopcw.org/44YYpkN

Congratulations to Tonga on ratifying the CTBT. This marks an important milestone for our region, with all countries in the Pacific now party to the Treaty. Australia looks forward to working with Tonga to strengthen the global ban on nuclear test explosions.

Australia is disappointed that the 11th NPT Review Conference did not reach consensus despite best efforts of many. Sincere thanks to @dohungviet and UNODA. Despite the lack of formal outcome, there is strong commitment to the NPT and its essential role.

Four weeks of in-depth discussions at the 11th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty allowed for a thorough review of the three pillars of the NPT, and the affirmation of the vital role of the @iaeaorg in supporting the implementation of the Treaty. Despite the lack of a final outcome document, the NPT and IAEA continue to serve global peace and development by preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and enabling peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The significance of the NPT is not defined by the absence of an agreement on a Final Declaration. I applaud the tireless efforts of Ambassador @dohungviet of 🇻🇳. The IAEA will not stop for a single minute in advancing these objectives!
