Former prime minister Paul Keating has defended Labor’s capital gains tax overhaul, arguing the Howard-era changes made housing “unaffordable for a whole generation”. Keating says the current system unfairly favours wealth over income, backing the Albanese Government’s plan to scrap the 50 per cent CGT discount from July 2027. The former treasurer, who introduced the original CGT model in 1985, dismissed claims the reforms would hurt entrepreneurship or small business. Some big housing news for the Sunshine State. The Albanese Government is partnering with the Crisafulli Government to build 51,000 new homes in Queensland.  And, we’re setting aside 20,000 of those homes just for first home buyers. More homes. More choices. More young Queenslanders getting a shot at owning a home.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has defended Labor’s controversial changes to capital gains tax, as new polling shows Opposition leader Angus Taylor ahead as preferred PM following the federal budget. During the 2025 election campaign, Labor ruled out changes to capital gains tax, but last week’s budget removed tax breaks for property investors in a major policy back-flip.
